Creating a new basic page in an existing repository's Exhibit

- The /explore/ Basic Pages use Omeka Classic. Official Omeka Classic documentation can be found at <https://omeka.org/classic/docs/> -  a reminder that the /explore/ Omeka instance stores your Basic Pages in Omeka "Exhibits" per repository. 
  - The Omeka Items and Collections sections in /explore/ Omeka are **only** enabled for you to upload decorative or supplementary images to your Basic Pages.
  - **Do not upload digital collection items to the /explore/ Omeka's Collections and Items sections**  -  /explore/ is only intended to allow you to create Basic Pages about your digitized collections. 
  - Please refer to the [Collections U of T ingest instructions](https://utlib.github.io/collections-uoft/documentation/ingest-instructions) if you would like to add a new collection into Collections U of T for your repository.
- If you do not have a Collections U of T repository account then please consult the [Requesting a Repository instructions](https://utlib.github.io/collections-uoft/documentation/adding-new-collections). You cannot use the /explore/ Omeka instance if you do not have any digital collections in Collections U of T.

Once logged in, from the dashboard, click "Exhibits" to edit your repository's Basic Pages.

Note: Depending on your /explore/ Omeka user role permissions, the sidebar on this page may look different to you.

Click "Edit" of the Exhibit you wish to edit or add a Basic Page to.

Note: Clicking on the title (i.e. "Anatomia Collection" in this image) will take you to the front-end page. Always click "Edit".

Scroll to the bottom and click "Add Page"

Click the "Menu Link Title" field and add what you would like the page to be called in the menu

Click the "Page Slug" field and add the slug for the new page, do not add the full URL - just enter the slug for the page. Do not enter any "/". Use underscores to separate words (not dashes).

The slug for this page would be "about_example"

After filling this in you can choose to build the content on your page...

...or save the page first by clicking "Save Changes" to create the new page.

After the page is saved you can go back to the Exhibit edit page and use the cross to move the page order. You can also nest pages.

For your existing Exhibits please ensure you do not move the first page in your /explore/ Exhibit page order.

The first page is always your /explore/ landing page, unless the "Use Summary Page?" setting is checked off. For most /explore/ Exhibits, we do not use the summary page. This means you must keep the first page at the top of the Exhibit page list, otherwise your landing page will change to whatever page you place at the top. 

Always keep the first page as the first in the Exhibit page list. Avoid enabling the "Use Summary Page?" setting.

On the page you are editing, select "Collections U of T Embed". This is a custom embed specific to Collections U of T IIIF manifests. It will display a Mirador embed of any digital object from Collections U of T on your page.

Paste your chosen IIIF Manifest URL into this field

Remember: the IIIF Manifest can be found under "Share and Reuse" on the digital object's page.

... and then return to your basic page to paste the copied IIIF Manifest into the "IIIF Manifest URL" field.

Thumbnail navigation is disabled in the embed by default (i.e. paging through a book). If a single image: leave the default settings.

If you are adding an object with multiple image, click "enabled" to enable thumbnails.

With thumbnails enabled, your resulting IIIF embed will display thumbnails.

Biography of Sir Frederick Grant Banting (1891-1941)

Born on a farm near Alliston, Ontario on 14 November 1891, Frederick Grant Banting was the fourth and youngest son of William Thompson Banting and Margaret (Grant) Banting's five children[1]. Fred Banting was an average student, described as a hard-working, shy, and serious child by local schoolteachers. His grades were sufficient to earn admission at the University of Toronto. In 1910 he enrolled in the general arts course at Victoria College, with tentative plans to pursue a degree in the Methodist ministry.

This plan, perhaps more a reflection of his parent's desires than his own, did not materialize and Banting left Victoria College before completing his first year. In the fall of 1912, Banting re-entered the University of Toronto, this time enrolling in the Faculty of Medicine with a specialty in surgery.

Upon declaration of war on 4 August 1914, Fred Banting attempted to enlist in the Canadian Army the following day. Citing his poor eyesight, the Army rejected him. He later joined the Canadian Army Medical Service, however, after earning high grades and completing most of his medical training. He enlisted as a private in the spring of 1915 and before the fall of that year held the rank of sergeant. The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, also eager to join the war effort, designed a special curriculum for the class of 1917, condensing the fifth year into a special summer and fall semester. Along with most of the other young men in his class, Banting graduated with a bachelor's degree in medicine (M.B.) on 9 December 1916. He reported for active service the following morning.

**In the IIIF Embed - Workspace control is disabled by default.**

Enabling workspace controls will provide users with more options for using IIIF images. Options include:

- Multiple window views (single image, gallery, side-by-side, scroll)
- Multiple workspace modes
- Ability to save a workspace setting and export for later use

IIIF Embed Workspace controls are for more advanced uses of IIIF. 

To add workspace controls, select the "Layout Options" dropdown.

Select "Enable workspace controls?" field

Enabling workspace controls will add this sidebar to IIIF images. From the Workspaces control panel a user can add images for comparison and add manifests from external institutions.

Use the **Link Gallery** block in the /explore/ Omeka instead of the default Gallery block. The instructions that follow are for the Link Gallery but the **Link Carousel** block works in a similar fashion (use **Link Carousel** instead of the default Carousel). 

Depending on your user permissions, you may need ITS or supervisor support to add Items for use in the Link Gallery.

When you are ready to create your Link Gallery, select "Link Gallery" on the page you are editing.

Click "Add new content block" to add the link gallery to the page

Find and select the Images from the Items list that you wish to add to the link gallery.

If you wish to add a caption, you can do so when adding items, or go back later by selecting "Edit" to edit all of the images you add.

Add your caption and make sure you add your link to the text - the link will become clickable for an end user to take them to a specific Collections U of T item or page. When you are done click "Apply".

To add another item to your link gallery, click "Add Item"

Click "Save Changes" to apply your changes to the page.

- <https://collections.library.utoronto.ca/explore/chamberlin/chamberlin_about> - you can use it on an "about" page to highlight collections. Tip: if you want the text to appear beside the link gallery, use the Link Gallery block text field. If you want it to display underneath, add a new Text block.

**Responsive images adjust their size and resolution based on the size of the device or screen they are being viewed on. Use this option if you want to add decorative images to your Basic Pages.** 

**If you are adding a IIIF image from Collections U of T, use the IIIF Embed instead.**

To add a decorative image to your Basic Page, select "Responsive Images" from the page edit screen.

Click "Add new content block" to add it to your page

You can add a caption and click "Apply". 

Editing Layout Options (Responsive Images)

Click the drop down arrow to reveal layout options

You can select "Fullsize," "Thumbnail," or "Square Thumbnail." Not all items have the quality to be fullsize, so it is best to check.

You can select if the captions are centred, right aligned, or left aligned with the image.

Click "Save Changes" to apply them to the page.

Click "View Public Page" to view what the front-end looks like with your changes.

If you selected "Fullsize" and the image is blurry, return to the block and select click "Layout Options"

Change your file size from "fullsize" to "thumbnail" or "square thumbnail" (note that "square thumbnail" will cut off part of the image).

"Showcase file position" will "showcase" the first item: it will be bigger than the rest. You can decide to have no showcase file, or position the showcase file to the right or left.

If there is no showcase file or text, the gallery will use the full width of the page. If there is a showcase file, you can position the gallery to the left or right.

Select your file size as "fullsize," "thumbnail," or "square thumbnail" (note that "square thumbnail" will cut off part of the image and some items do not have high enough image quality to be full size and will appear fuzzy -  you may need to resize the image).

Select the captions position (centre, left, or right) under the gallery

You can pick how many imagges display per row (2, 3, or 4).

If you want to add a menu link to your repository's Exhibit you can use the Meta Redirect block. This block will create a sidebar menu item but direct users to a page outside of the /explore/ Omeka instance.

To add one, navigate to your repository's Exhibit page and click "Edit"

Fill in the page title (this won't matter - the "page" simply redirects a user to an external page)

Choose what you want to display in the sidebar menu and enter that label in the "Menu Link Title" field.

Then enter something in the the "Page Slug" field (this won't really matter).

Scroll down and add a Meta Redirect block.

IMPORTANT: click the "Target URL" field and enter the FULL URL of the page you want to add to the menu.

Click "View Public Page" to test your redirect.

You will see your page added to the menu. Click the Meta Redirect to test that it works as expected.

Examples of Exhibits with Meta Redirect blocks are:

- <https://collections.library.utoronto.ca/explore/utarms-online/about> - all of the sidebar menu items link back to UTARMS Collections U of T page or utarms.library.utoronto.ca
- <https://collections.library.utoronto.ca/explore/anatomia/search_and_browse> - the "&lt; Back to Anatomia" menu item takes users back to the Collections U of T landing page for the collection

If your Meta Redirect doesn't work as expected, click back into the page and edit it again.

You can also click "Delete" to delete it from the sidebar.
