This tutorial assumes you've followed the tutorials described in the **Create and share an app** sequence of tutorials, up through **Uploading documents**.

Classes are how we tell AI Hub what kinds of documents we expect our app to see. In this guide you'll learn how to define classes.

To create a class, click the **Create classes** icon

Within the dropdown, click **Create classes** because we're defining a class from scratch instead of using a predefined class

Use natural language for the title of the class, which of the type of document that belongs to this class

In this case, type "Bank Statement"

If the name of the class is vague or cryptic (for example, a name that's only understood within your company), click the **Description** field and enter a natural language description of the class. This helps your app understand what documents belong to this class

In this case, the title "Bank Statement" is specific and unambiguous, so we don't need to add a description

Click the **X** to close the class definition

We've added some payslip documents to the project, so we need to make a second class for them

Click the **Create classes** icon again

This title is probably clear enough for the AI model to understand, so we don't need to enter a class description

Click the **X** to close the class definition

To reduce visual clutter, click the twisty icon next to the **Bank Statement** class definition, this hides the class's details

Notice that there's a third class already defined: **Other**

This is an exception handling class, if the project isn't sure how to classify a document, it will assign that document to the **Other** class

Click **Classify documents** so the app can decide which class each uploaded document belongs to, this process is called "classification"

If your documents have several pages, where each page potentially belongs to a different class (imagine a single PDF that contains both a bank statement and a payslip), you would click **Split Documents** to tell the project to classify each page separately

In this case we have only one class per document, so click **Continue without splitting**

If the document you're viewing changes class, you might see a **Document class changed** popup

You can decide whether to keep viewing that document in its new class, or view a different document from the original class

Now that the documents are classified, you can sort them in various ways. Click the **Group by** icon to see the options

You'll usually want to sort by class. Since this is the default sort order, close the popup by clicking the **X**

If a document is classified incorrectly, you need to improve the name and/or description of the class it was incorrectly assigned to, and/or of the class it should have been assigned to

To edit a class definition, first click on or near the class's name

Click the **three dots** icon next to the class's name

Edit the class's name and/or description to give your project clearer or more detailed instructions on when to classify documents into this class

Click the **X** to close the class definition and save the new name and description
