One type of field an app can populate is called a "document reasoning" field.

These fields don't extract a specific piece of information from documents like other fields do. Instead, they use a natural language prompt to create a new result based on one or more pieces of information in a document.

The success of a reasoning field depends on the quality of the natural language prompt that defines it. Since prompts can be hard to write, AI Hub provides an **Enhance prompt** button to suggest an alternative prompt that might work better than the original prompt.

This tutorial shows you how to create a reasoning field and enhance its prompt.

Start with an app that has uploaded files

In this example, the **Bank statements** app has one bank statement uploaded

Name the field

In this example, we'll type [[biggest expense category]]

Change the field's type from the default value of **Text extraction** by clicking the **Field type** dropdown

Used to generate values that must be deduced based on information in the document.

Erase the default value in the **Natural language prompt** field

Type a natural language prompt that describes the information you want in the field

It doesn’t have to be a single piece of information from the document — the field can use reasoning or logic to construct a value from one or more other bits of information that are in the documents

In this example, we'll type [[Assign each expense to a logical category. Which category has the biggest total expense?]]

See how well your prompt works by clicking **Run**

See the results of the natural language prompt

If you don't see the results you want, or if you need help writing an effective prompt, click **Enhance prompt**

The app replaces your prompt with an alternative prompt

It then runs the alternative prompt so you can see if it gives better results

To return to the original prompt, click **Undo**
