Step 1 - 7 shows where to find the report in Canvas.

To find a student's similarity report, go to Grades in Canvas.

Click on the "coloured flag" to open a student's similarity report

As soon as a student hands in the assignment, you see a coloured flag. This tells you the similarity report is created and what the percentage of similarity is:

- **Blue:** No matching text
- **Green:** One word to 24% matching text
- **Yellow:** 25-49% matching text
- **Orange:** 50-74% matching text
- **Red:** 75-100% matching text

Requirements: Turnitin will only accept files that can generate Similarity Reports.

- **Files less than 100 MB;**
- **Files with a minimum of 20 words;**
- **File less than 800 pages;**
- **Only [accepted file types](https://guides.turnitin.com/hc/en-us/articles/23929463501965-File-requirements).**

Click "Speedgrader".

In Speedgrader you can annotate and grade as you normally do.

Click on the coloured percentage. The report will open in a new window.

The first time you open a report you have to accept the End-User License Agreement (EULA).

Make sure you accept the End-User License Agreement (EULA) the first time you go to Turnitin. When you don't accept the EULA you might receive an error (error 431) when opening a similarity report in Turnitin. 

In the report you can choose to **Switch to the new view.**

Here you find the submission details. On the first tab you find details about the submission. The Submission ID is useful as a reference when you have a question or experience a problem.

On the second tab, you find submission details of the file. \
For example the word count.

On the third tab, you find details about the text: fonts, spelling and contract cheating keyword. These findings could give an indication of plagiarism (copying and pasting text from different sources).

**Click Similarity**

Here you find the overall similarity percentage. This is the percentage of the paper for which overlap has been found in the Turnitin Database.

Switch to the classic view

**The Match Groups tab** categorizes matches into groups, based on the usage of in-text citations and quotation marks. Each match is highlighted in its corresponding match group color.

**Not Cited or Quoted**: Text matches that are not written as quotations or have no citation to their original source. These matches can be a strong indication of plagiarism and may require further investigation.

**Missing Quotations:** Text is cited, but the match is so exact that it may also require quotation marks. These matches can be used as an opportunity to provide feedback on how to properly cite and attribute sources.

**Missing Citation:** Text is written as a quote but lacks a citation to its original source. These matches can be used as an opportunity to provide feedback on how to properly cite and attribute sources.

**Cited and Quoted:** Text contains the correct use of quotations and is cited properly. These matches are a great opportunity to spotlight student strengths and encourage them to build on those strengths in other areas of their work.

When you click Sources you will get an overview of the sources where similarity was found (not divided into Match Groups).

You can click the arrow to open a source card.

A source card presents information on the source, including the name, percentage of text matched within the document, number of matched text blocks and words, and more. You can also view the full source text or exclude the match directly from the source card.

Here you can include the source(s) again.

On the Sources tab you can also choose to show overlapping sources. When you select this individual source cards for every match, including sources matched to the same text will be displayed.

Filters allows you to customize the report and streamline your analysis by providing a range of options to exclude irrelevant matches and modify which databases students submissions are checked against.

Filters can be used to customize the report to display or hide certain matches and sources, depending on their relevance to your review. For example, switching the Bibliography filter to the "off" position will hide all matches found in the bibliography or list of references at the end of the paper.

Excluding the bibliography can be interesting, because the similarity found here is often irrelevant. However, including the bibliography might also give information when references **don't** show similarity. This could be an indication references are made up by the student or by AI.

You can also exclude a specific database, for example the database (source type) for Publications. Find more information about the content of the databases of Turnitin on the website of Turnitin <https://www.turnitin.com/about/content>

**Always have a look at these flags, because these are important warnings for manipulations in the document.**

Click "Flags" to find out about suspicious finds in the document.

Click "Hidden text" to see which text has been hidden.

Click "Replaced characters" to see which characters have been replaced.

After you click the AI Writing tab in the report, you find which text has been determined to be generated by AI.

**The AI writing score is divided into two detection categories:**

**AI-generated only:** This category detects qualifying text that was likely generated from a Large Language Model (LLM). Text of this category is highlighted in a cyan color in the submission breakdown bar and in the submission.

**AI-generated text that was AI-paraphrased**: This category detects qualifying text that was likely AI-generated and then likely modified by an AI-paraphrasing tool or AI word spinner, such as Quillbot. Text of this category is highlighted in a purple color in the submission breakdown bar and in the submission.

Requirements. For the AI Writing Detection to work:

- **File size must be less than 100 MB;**
- **File must have at least 300 words of prose text in a long-form writing format;**
- **File must not exceed 30.000 words;**
- **File must be written in English;**

What to do when you want a thesis to be checked on AI, but it exceeds 30.000 words?

- You could ask students to submit the appendices as separate documents.
- You could split the document yourself and hand both documents in via the [Turnitin Originality web portal](//turnitin.maastrichtuniversity.nl).
