PENDING VS. OPEN INVOICES
In a nutshell, the difference is how the marketing opportunity is configured.  

If a marketing opportunity is set to "Invoice Upon Task Completion", the agent's invoice will open in "Pending" status, and will change to "Open" once the task is complete.

In other marketing opportunities, where the option to "Invoice Upon Task Completion" is NOT checked, the agent will be billed immediately, and the invoice status will be "Open".

MARKETING OPPORTUNITY NEEDED
Amy clicks "Marketing" to get her order for postcards started.

LOCATE MARKETING OPPORTUNITY
Amy knows that there are many opportunities available to her, so she will search for "postcard" to narrow down her search. 

Click the "Search by name" field, and type "postcard". The marketing opportunity she needs appears right at the top.

ORDER THE MARKETING OPPORTUNITY
To start the order, she will click "Start".

REVIEW THE MARKETING OPPORTUNITY
Once she looks over the options (if any), and decides she wants to place the order, she will click "Next".

SPECIFY DETAILS OF ORDER
Complete the order details before submitting the order.

To continue with the the order, click "Next".

SUBMIT ORDER
Confirm the details of the order and click "Submit Order".

INVOICE IN "OPEN" STATUS
Amy's invoice pops up immediately after she submits the order, and is in "Open" status, and giving her options to pay the invoice.

HOW AN INVOICE STARTS IN 'PENDING' STATUS
Amy now needs to order some brochures for one of her listings.

She locates the brochure and clicks "Start".

CONFIRM AND CONTINUE
She looks over the details to confirm that this is the brochure she meant to select, and clicks "Next" to continue with placing her order.

COMPLETE AND CONTINUE
She completes all the necessary fields and clicks "Next" to continue to the next step.

SUBMIT ORDER
Amy looks over the final order and then she clicks "Submit Order".

INVOICE IS IN 'PENDING' STATUS
Because this marketing opportunity was set to "Invoice Upon Task Completion", Amy's invoice is immediately shown in "PENDING" status, and she is given options to pay it. Once the individual who claims the task completes it, then the invoice status will change to "OPEN".
