Since our georeferenced map shows campus buildings, let's create a vector shapefile of building outlines and their historic names so we have a dataset of what campus looked like in 1944.

Find the "New Shapfile Layer" button on the toolbar and click it

Click on the "..." button next to the "File Name" box

Name the new file "CampusBuildings_1944" and save it somewhere you can find it

Change the geometry to polygon and click "OK"

Note that a shapefile is actually 4 files when you use the data. As long as they share the same name, GIS software will view them as connected.
