Effective Date timing is critical:
1. IF you are ending the PAP early and the new end date is in the **future**, then you can use today's date (or the start date of the next pay period) as the effective date.\
\
Example: Today is 5/22/26 and you want to end a PAP on 6/24/26 instead of 8/24/26. The effective date can be 5/22/26 (or 5/25/26).
2. IF you are ending the PAP and the new end date is in the **PAST**, then use the end date of the last pay period as the effective date (will be either the 9th or the 24th).\
\
Example: Today is 5/22/26 and the PAP should have ended 5/9/26. The effective date should be 5/09/26.\
\
**IMPORTANT NOTE:** A period activity pay **CANNOT** be ended prior to the last date it has been paid. The earliest date the PAP can be ended is the last day of the last pay period processed. (Please refer to the payroll processing calendar if needed.)\
\
Example: Today is 5/22/26 and the PAP should have ended 4/9/26. In this case, both the 4/10 - 4/24 and 4/25 - 5/9 payrolls have already processed and those payments made. The earliest the PAP can be ended is 5/9/26. In this example, the employee has been OVERPAID. See below:\
\
*Example **for someone who has been overpaid**:* Today is 5/22/26 and the PAP should have ended 4/9/26 (which means the employee has been overpaid for 2 pay periods). The effective date for ending the PAP should be 5/9/26.
1. An earlier date cannot be used since the PAP has already been paid out.
2. **An email should be sent to Payroll ([payofc@wm.edu](mailto:payofc@wm.edu)) with details about the overpayment so recovery of monies overpaid can begin.**
