Accessing DICOM Files (macOS)

This course walks you through how to find and open medical imaging files from an OmegaAI or Blume study export on a Mac computer. You’ll learn how to navigate the folder structure, locate diagnostic reports, and open DICOM image files using a viewer.

Understanding the Folder Structure

After downloading the study, **double-click** the **.zip** file in **Finder** to extract the folder.

**Double-click** the extracted folder (**Patient Folder**). Inside, you’ll see: - **Series folders** - These contain the actual **DICOM** imaging files. - **DiagnosticReport** folder - This contains finalized reports in **.pdf** format.

Opening DICOM Files in a Viewer

Open the patient folder in a macOS DICOM viewer such as **OsiriX Lite** (free). Most viewers read the numbered files as they are, so you usually don’t need to rename anything.

- Open **OsiriX**. - Click on **File** > **Import** > **DICOM File(s)...** - Select the patient folder and click **Open**. You can also drag the patient folder onto the OsiriX database.

Renaming DICOM Files (Optional)

Tip: Only do this if your viewer couldn’t open the numbered files in the step above.

Open a **Series folder**. The files are **numbered** and may not show an extension. These are valid DICOM images. Before renaming, make sure macOS shows file extensions:\ • Open **Finder**.\ • Go to **Finder** > **Settings** (or **Preferences**).\ • Under the **Advanced** tab, check "**Show all filename extensions**"

Select a numbered file. Press **Return** (or **right-click** and choose **Rename**). Add **.dcm** to the end, for example, change [[1]] to [[1.dcm]]. The file icon or type will update, making it ready to view in a DICOM viewer.
