How to search Statista

Statista is a great source of statistics, reports and market insights. It contains over 1,000,000 statistics, infographics, surveys and reports. Sources include government institutions, international organisations, market research institutes, and trade journals. They have also recently introduced a new Research AI tool. Please note - we have access to Market Insights, but not Consumer and eCommerce Insights.

Statista

How to use Statista's basic search

Follow the link to [**Statista.**](https://oxfordbrookes.idm.oclc.org/OverDrive/statista) You may be prompted to enter your Brookes login (student number and password).

You can use the main search box to search for individual keywords, or use natural language searching (a full sentence or question). In this example, we are searching for **supermarkets uk**. Type in your search terms and click the blue search button.

At the top of your results list you have a number of filter options, including **Location**, **Year coverage,** and **Content type**. On the right-hand side, you will see a brief topic summary with a link to **Continue in Research AI Chat** (find out more in the section on [How to use the Research AI tool](https://scribehow.com/viewer/Statista_Workflow__B_h6aq-pQxywlds452yjEg?scrollToActionId=3af546b9)).

Under **Location**, you can either select from the drop-down list or type in the name of the country or region you want to focus on. In this example, we have selected **United Kingdom**. Once you have ticked the box for that location, click **Apply**.

Under **Year coverage** you can choose from a list of options (e.g. Last 5 years) or type in a custom date range. Click **Apply** when you have finished. **Please note** - Topics will **not appear** in the results list if you set a specific date range.

Under **Content type** you can choose from the following options: - **Statistics:** Over 1,000,000 statistics from four different databases - **Reports:** More detailed analysis of specific subjects - **Topics:** Overview/starting point for your research - **Market Insights:** Analysis and evaluations for various markets - **Infographics:** Visualization of statistics Use the tick boxes to select your preferred option(s) and click **Apply**.

How to customise and download Statistics

Click on one of the titles in your results list to open it. This is a **Statistic** showing the average cost of a shopping basket in the UK as of October 2025, broken down by supermarket name.

Select the **cog icon** on the right-hand side of the chart to change the chart type between bar chart, line graph and table. You can also change or hide the data labels if you wish.

You can download Statistics as a PNG, PDF, XLS or PPT file using the options in the top-right **Download** box.

Under **Source** you can view the source of the data, the publisher and the conductor of the survey (this could be all the same organisation or multiple different ones). You can click on the source link to view where the data was taken from.

Under **Details** you can find information about the region, survey time period, and any other notes.

Under **FAQ** you can find the answers to questions such as 'how is the data collected?'

How to use Topics

Statista **Topics** provide you with an overview of a subject and give you a list of relevant Insights and Statistics. They can be a good starting point for your research. Click **Show more** to read the summary. **Please note** - Topics will **not appear** in your search results if you set a specific date range. If you don't see Topics in your search results, check the filters at the top of the screen and remove any that filter by date.

The **Key Insights** box will show highlighted statistics, such as market value. You can click on these links to view the statistics in full.

If you scroll down the page, you will find more related statistics organised into sub categories, such as **Market overview**. Click on any of these links to view and download them (see section [How to customise and download statistics](https://scribehow.com/viewer/How_to_search_Statista__B_h6aq-pQxywlds452yjEg?scrollToActionId=330a251c)).

At the bottom of the page, you will find **Related topics**: links to other Topics on similar subjects to help you expand your search.

How to use Reports

Statista **Reports** combine curated statistics with some analysis and discussion of specific subjects.

Under **Report Details** you can see the number of pages, the format (usually PDF, but sometimes also available as PPT), publication date, source, and whether it is included in Brookes' subscription. If it does **not** say **Included in your account**, make sure you are logged in to [Statista](https://oxfordbrookes.idm.oclc.org/OverDrive/statista)with your Brookes account.

Check the **Table of contents** to see if this report is relevant to your research.

To view the full report, click the blue **Download** button. (If multiple file formats are available, this will open a drop-down menu first). The file will appear in your downloads folder.

How to use Insights

Statista **Insights** focus on analysis and evaluation of market data. You can access them using search and filtering by content type (see the section on[ Content Types](https://scribehow.com/viewer/How_to_search_Statista__B_h6aq-pQxywlds452yjEg?scrollToActionId=13b53e5a)) or by selecting **Insights** from the top menu bar and browsing by subject. **Please note**: Brookes' subscription only covers Market Insights, we don't have access to Consumer or E-Commerce Insights.

Click **Explore Market Insights** to browse the list of subjects.

Select from one of the broader categories (e.g. **Consumer**).

Under **Explore Markets** you will see a number of options for different consumer markets. In this example we have selected **Luxury Goods.**

Click **Segment Overview** to see an overview of the global market. You can also select a more specific market segment (e.g. Luxury Leather Goods) from the options below.

This is the Luxury Goods segment overview. The default currency displayed is **USD (US$)**, but you can change this by going to the drop-down menu on the right, clicking on the arrow, and selecting another option from the list (e.g. **GBP£**).

Use the drop-down menus below to select a different **Market**, **Region**, or **Compare to other regions**.

Select **Market** to choose from the Market Selection options, or use the search box in the top-right of the screen to search for a specific market, then click **Show market** (bottom right).

Select **Region,** then choose a **Regions** option (e.g. **Countries & Territories**). Select a country/region from the alphabetical list, or type the country/region name you want into the search box in the top-right of the screen. Tick the box next to the country or region you want to select (e.g. **United Kingdom**). When you have made your selection, click **Show Region** (bottom right).

Select **Compare to other regions** to directly compare data from different countries or geographic areas. You can select up to 4 at a time. Choose a **Regions** option e.g. (**Countries & Territories**), then select from the alphabetical list, or use the search box (top right). Tick the boxes next to your chosen regions/countries (in this example, we have selected **United States** and **United Kingdom**). Click **Show comparison** (bottom right) when you have chosen which countries/regions to compare.

Use the **Overview** to jump to specific sections (e.g. Key Players).

You can download a specific chart using the arrow icon on the right-hand side.

To download the full dataset for this Insight, click the blue **Download** button and select one of the options (.XLS or .CSV).

How to use the Research AI tool

Statista recently introduced a new AI tool. It identifies the ten most relevant sources from Statista's database, including Statistics, Infographics, Topics and Market Insights. **Please note**: Consumer Insights are **not included** in our subscription. All responses are taken from within Statista's database, not the open web. It also shows you source links so you can verify the information. Select **Research AI** from the top menu bar to begin searching.

Type your prompt into the search box. For example: "How do UK supermarkets deal with food waste?" Click the blue search button.

**Please note:** Although there is a new option to include **Consumer Insights** in your AI search, these are **not included** in our subscription. Use the toggle switch at the top right of the page to turn this off.

The Research AI tool will generate a very brief **TL;DR** summary, followed by a more detailed summary report. You will see numbered references in the summary report that will directly link to the original **Sources** (e.g. Statistics, Topics).

You can also find a list of all of the **Sources** on the right-hand side. Click on the arrow to expand further. Click on the individual titles to read the original statistics, reports etc. and check they are relevant and up to date.

Some of the sources listed in this example are quite old (2016-2017), so we may need to edit our original prompt to only include more recent information.

For example, we could add "Include only sources from 2021-2026" to the search box at the bottom of the screen. Click **Show processing steps** if you want to see how the AI tool constructs the search. Remember, adding in a date range will **exclude Topics** from your search.

Further down the page, you will find query suggestions to help you continue or expand your search. To start a new search, click the **New chat** button.
