How to use Mintel's basic search

This is the search bar. Mintel is a database best accessed using this interface. You can type any keyword in here. In this example I'm going to use the keyword "juice".

Mintel will automatically suggest some items related to your search. These will be ordered by relevance and recency. If you want to directly open one of these reports you can click on them here.

If you don't like any of the suggested titles, or you want to view a wider selection of options, then click the yellow magnifying glass icon.

How to filter results

Your search can be filtered by content type by scrolling down from the search bar and clicking this drown-down menu option.

Mintel has multiple content types. "Reports" are the most numerous and the most important. These are detailed and extensive overviews of industry sectors for specific years. "Industry Trends", "Expert Insights" and "Newsletters" are shorter and have more opinion or speculation than "Reports".

You can also choose how you wnat your resultas to be sorted, either by how relevant Mintel thinks items are or in order of most to least recent in publication.

Back up next to the search bar there are four dropdown options for further filters. Hover over one of these to get further options. Here I am hovering over the "Category" filter and this grey stack of potential categories has appeared on the left.

If I hover over a category, the further sub-categories will appear on the right. You can select the main category by click on the first option in this list or you can select as more specific sub-category as shown here.

This structure applies to all four of the filters that appear alongside the search bar. As well as filtering by the category of market you are interested in, you can use the "Region" filter to specify where in the world you are interested in. Here I am selecting the sub-category US of the category North America.

The filter for "Trend Drivers" also includes an option to ask for Mintel's predictions. Trend Drivers are Mintel way of identifying and cataloguing the core conscious and subconscious influences on consumer behaviour. You can learn more about what Trend Drivers are and how Mintel identifies them using the link shown in the bottom left of this image.

The Demographics filter allows you to narrow down your search to particular groups, either by gender, age, spending power, or cultural factors. Here I am slecting the option for items about Millennial consumers.

If you make your search too specific, it may be that Mintel doesn't have any results that cover everything you're looking for.

You can always click "Clear All" to reset all the filters on your search if you need to.
