VMware Integration

This module walks through the latest VMware monitoring capabilities within Dell AIOps by utilizing the Collector tool to collect the VM telemetry from vSphere and sending through the secure telemetry conduit, SCG. We will look at various details about a virtual machine, see how Dell AIOps reports on configuration changes in the VMware or related storage environment, review key performance metrics for a VM and demonstrate how Dell AIOps identifies performance anomalies and impacts on the VM.

Virtual Machine Details

In this lesson, we will explore the VMware Details page. We will see summary level information of a VM as well as how Dell AIOps reports on related configuration changes, key performance metrics and the end-to-end storage path.

Click **Home** Click the **search** icon.

Type **"MR\_"** in the Global Search window to find all virtual machines (and storage objects) containing this text.

Click **"MR_VM1"** from the listing of Virtual Machines.

Selecting **MR_VM1** brings us to the **Virtual Machine Details** page. The top of the window displays various properties for the Virtual Machine including its IP address, capacity information, ESXi host, and more. It also includes hyperlinks to the ESXi details page and the Dell AIOps Collector details page.

The bottom half of the window displays performance related information. The bottom left of the window shows 3 key performance metrics for the virtual machine over the last 24 hours: CPU Readiness, Active Memory, and Storage Latency, as well as a chart for configuration changes. Dell AIOps also displays any anomalies for these metrics with a shaded blue area and highlights areas of performance impacts with a light pink shading.

In this example, we see two performance impacts identified in the Storage Latency chart and they are both accompanied by performance anomalies. Similar to the way performance impacts are identified against storage objects, Dell AIOps analyzes the VMware related metrics to determine a rise in latency against other performance metrics such as IOPS and Bandwidth to differentiate performance changes caused by increased workloads from performance impacts due to competing workloads. Hovering the mouse over the chart displays the time stamp and value of the metric. Clicking the bar on the Configuration Changes chart calls up the details for the change(s) in that time period. We will view the details of configuration changes using the Configuration Changes tab later in this module.

The right portion of the Performance window is broken into three tabs: **END TO END MAP, STORAGE PATHS,** and **CONFIGURATION CHANGES**. The **END TO END MAP** tab shows the relationship of the virtual machine to the ESXi Server, ESXi Cluster, Datastore, Storage Network, LUN, Volume or Storage Group and Storage System. The map is interactive allowing us to select on the individual objects along the data path to view key performance metrics at each object. It also highlights objects with performance impacts in pink. Select **LocalESX1.**

Once the ESXi server is selected, the CPU and memory performance metrics are displayed in the bottom portion of the window that relate to the time selected in the left hand performance charts.

Select other objects in the data path to see key performance metrics for that object during the selected time on the performance chart.

Observe the available metrics for each selection as well as which objects have hyperlinks to the corresponding object details page. Select the **Network** link. This link shows details of the ports connected to the SAN network.

Select the **">"** arrow next to the principal switch WWN to show the details.

We can now see the host adapter WWN, the switch ports for the host and storage as well as the connected array port. There are also links to direct us to the switch details page.

Click **"STORAGE PATHS"**. It shows the datastore(s) along with the corresponding storage object(s) and storage system(s). The storage object and system are hyperlinks which allow us to quickly navigate to the corresponding details page.

Alert! If the Storage Paths tab shows no data, select End to End Map and then return to the Storage Paths tab.

Selecting the **">"** arrow on the row shows host, SAN and storage port information.

Click **"CONFIGURATION CHANGES"**

In this example, there have been two configuration changes to the CPUs/RAM in the VMware environment. Select the **"2"** in the Configuration Changes window to bring up details about the change.

In this example, we see that memory was increased from 8 GB to 12 GB and the number of CPUs was increased from 1 to 2. This is useful to possibly correlate configuration changes in the environment with changes in the performance profile. Select **"Close"** to close out the Configuration Change Details window.

Let's revisit the performance impacts mentioned earlier in this module. Performance impacts are situations where Dell AIOps identifies a rise in storage latency along with a decrease in IOPS or Bandwidth and is caused by some type of competing resources. Similar to Performance Impacts for storage discussed in Module 3, Dell AIOps analyzes VMware performance metrics and performs a similar analysis to determine when a performance impact takes place and determines possible causes.

To see the VMware performance impact analysis, select the latest **Storage Latency** performance impact from the pull-down menu.

Click **"DETAILS"**

Dell AIOps will bring up a focused performance chart for VMware storage latency and will also determine if there is a storage-related performance impact.

Below the latency charts are performance charts for objects that Dell AIOps has identified as possible causes. In this example, we see a rise in IOPS on 3 different storage objects may be causing the performance impact. Scrolling down further, we can see that Dell AIOps also identifies if there are other impacted VMs. In this example, there are none.

Close the performance impact details charts.
