Creating a Gem allows you to customize how Gemini behaves for a specific task or workflow. Instead of re-explaining instructions each time you start a new chat, a Gem lets you define expectations once and reuse them consistently.
To create a Gem:
Open the Gem Manager
In Gemini, open the sidebar and select Gem Manager, then choose New Gem. This is where you will set up your customized assistant.
Define the Gem’s behavior
Write clear instructions describing what you want the Gem to do and what it should not do. This can include:
The role it should take (e.g., syllabus assistant, feedback helper)
The type of questions it can answer
Any boundaries or constraints (such as using only uploaded materials)
Tip: You can start with a rough idea and click the Magic Wand to help Gemini expand your instructions into more complete, structured guidance.
Add knowledge sources
Upload relevant documents—such as a syllabus, assignment prompt, rubric, or reference materials—to ground the Gem’s responses. These files act as the Gem’s source of truth and help prevent unsupported or speculative answers.
Save and reuse your Gem
Once saved, the Gem appears in your sidebar. Each time you select it, Gemini starts a new conversation using the same instructions and uploaded materials, allowing you to reuse the setup without reconfiguring it.
Gems are best suited for ongoing or repeated tasks where consistency, clarity, and defined boundaries are important.
Gems are personal to your account
Gems cannot be shared or linked directly
Other faculty or students must create their own Gem using the same instructions and their own materials
