Creating and Configuring Moodle Quizzes and Question Banks

Learn how to create a quiz in Moodle. Start by creating categories for questions in a Question Bank. Then add questions to those categories. After you have questions in categories within a course-level question bank, create the quiz and configure quiz settings. Then populate the quiz with questions from the bank. We do NOT recommend adding questions to a quiz without using a question bank and categories.

Navigate to a Moodle course or project space

Click "More"

Click "Question bank"

Select "Categories" from the Questions drop down menu

Click "Add category." You can also scroll down to view all the existing categories in the question bank.

Be sure "Top for {name of course}" is selected as the Parent category.

Click the "Name" field and type a course-content based category title, i.e. "Natural Resources" in an Environmental Science course.

Adding "Category info" is optional and only viewable to an instructor. It can be used to help organize the question bank and find questions later

Click "Add category"

Continue to follow the "Add category" steps

Check the parent category, type a descriptive and concise name, add category info if desired and Click "Add category."

To add subcategories, click "Add category"

Change the "Parent category" to the top category you want to use to create a subcategory.

Type the subcategory in the the "Name" field, i.e. Renewable vs Nonrenewable

Click "Add category"

Continue following the steps to "Add categories" and add subcategories.

Add questions to your Question Bank Categories. Select the "Categories" option.

Scroll through the list and choose a category to begin adding questions to that category.

Choose "Questions" and be sure the correct category is identified at the top of the Question bank field

Click "Create a new question ..."

Click the "Multiple choice" field. In choosing question types, refer to the [Moodle to Canvas Equivalencies table](https://go.ncsu.edu/moodle-canvas-table). Only choose quiz types that will migrate to Canvas.

Click "Add"

Add a short but descriptive name the "Question name" field. This name is only for the instructor. Students will not see it. The purpose is to help you find and organize questions.

Type the question in the "Question text" field.

Type correct and incorrect answer choices.

In the Grade field, for incorrect answers choose "None." Add feedback for students if desired. This is particularly helpful for review / practice quizzes.

Continue adding answer choices.

After typing the correct answer choice, select the "100%" Grade option so students will receive full credit for that answer.

You do not have to fill all answer choice spots. You can also add more answer choice fields.

Click "Save changes"

You can review the question in the Questions window of the Question bank.

Continue adding questions with in Categories. Select the "Categories" option to view questions within Categories.

Click a Category

You should see the Category in the Question bank field. Click "Apply filters" to see the questions in that Category.

Click "Course" to go back to the main course view and add the quiz.

Click the "Edit mode" field.

Click the plus icon to open the Activity chooser.

Click "Activity or resource"

Click "Quiz." If it's not in your "starred" options, choose "Activities" to find the Quiz activity type.

Click the "Name" field and title the quiz.

Click "Timing" to expand it

Set dates to open and close the quiz. Shorter time windows and time limits are useful for higher stakes quizzes. Provide more time to work on quizzes that are meant for practice.

Click "Grade" to expand it

Select the "Grade category" for this quiz. If you haven't set gradebook categories up for your course, you can find out more on this [Moodle Gradebook Guide](https://go.ncsu.edu/gradebook-workshop).

Optional: Set a "Grade to pass" This setting determines the minimum grade required to pass. The value is used in activity and course completion, and in the gradebook, where pass grades are highlighted in green and fail grades in red.

Review the "Attempts allowed" options. More attempts (including unlimited) are best for quizzes used as low stakes practice options.

Click "Question behavior" to expand it.

Determine your choice for "How questions behave." Deferred feedback - students will not receive feedback, information about their grade on a quiz, etc. until after their attempt.

Determine your choice for "How questions behave." Immediate feedback allows you to give feedback, information on grades, correct answer information, etc. during a student's quiz attempt.

Click "Review options" to expand it.

If "Immediate feedback" was selected above in "How questions behave" then you can select options in the "During the attempt" column. This is best for practice activities or low stakes assessment.

If "Deferred feedback" was selected above in "How questions behave" then you CANNOT select options in the "During the attempt" column. Options for feedback, students seeing their points, students reviewing the attempt, etc. are only available after the attempt. Use the embedded question mark help to understand the different categories. Carefully select what you want students to see in each column: "During the attempt," "Immediately after the attempt," "Later, while the quiz is still open," and "After the quiz is closed."

The fields we have covered are the most common and useful. When you have set the configurations for your quiz, click "Save and display"

You will be returned to the Quiz main page. Click "Add question"

Click "Add" in the lower right corner.

Click "from question bank"

Choose a category, click the drop down menu.

Click the Category you want to use to find questions.

Click "Apply filters"

Click the "Select" field next to any questions that you want to add to the quiz.

Click "Add selected questions to the quiz"

Adjust the points for each question. The total points from the questions should align with the "Maximum grade" points.

Click "Quiz" to return to the main Quiz page and then preview the quiz.

Click "Preview quiz"

Answer questions to check your work, check any feedback you added, etc.

Click "Finish attempt."

Click "Submit all and finish"

You have completed creating a quiz in Moodle. To review: 1. Open the **Question Bank** 2. Create **organizational Categories** in the Question Bank based on course content 3. **Add questions** in the Categories 4. On the main page of your Moodle Course, open the **activity chooser and add a Quiz** 5. Configure the **settings for the quiz** 6. **Add questions** from the Question Bank to your quiz
