Track seedling lineage, traits, and performance as you develop new dahlias.
Hybridizing is one of the most data-rich—and rewarding—parts of growing dahlias. Clade’s Hybridizing Module helps you document unnamed seedlings, observe traits over time, and analyze lineage down to the grandparent level.

Open the Hybridizing Tab
From your dashboard, click on the Hybridizing tab.
→ This section is completely separate from your main inventory.
Click "Add New Variety"
To get started with a new seedling, click the green add variety button on the top right of your screen. This will pull up the new variety form.
Enter Initial Details
Include seedling name, parent varieties, planting year, and optional traits like color, form, or height. Use your personal naming convention for seedlings (e.g., Seedling 24-03).
Clade lets you go deep:
Add seed parent and pollen parent
Optionally add grandparents on both sides
This builds a multi-generational record of lineage you can reference as you observe patterns.
Mark whether this variety was successfully pollinated.
Indicate if you collected seeds from this variety. Helpful for backtracking potential crosses.
Track the year you first trialed this seedling.
Mark whether you plan to keep this variety. This helps when culling or prioritizing for further testing.
Tack what each seedling looks like year over year.→ Great for noticing how blooms evolve or mature with age.
Finish by saving your seedling variety.
Once your data is added:
Filter by year, parent, or "keep" status
Review visual traits across groups
Export data for planning future crosses
The Hybridizing Module is your go-to space for tracking seedling performance from sprout to selection. Whether you’re experimenting or breeding intentionally, Clade keeps all your insights organized across seasons.
