Hybrid or Online Course: Enhanced Security Settings for New Quizzes

To enhance exam security, the Testing Center has provided a list of settings to consider enabling for your exam in New Quizzes. These settings are not required, however, they do enhance the security of your exam.

    LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser (LDB) can prevent students from accessing other locations within Canvas during their exams. Please note that without using LDB, students can access course notes, presentations, assignments, etc during their quiz.

Please note: LDB may not be able to be effectively used by off-campus/online students as the software is specific to Iowa State University. Instructors may be asked to deactivate these settings if an error occurs for a student.

    Question Types

Consider a variety of different question types, including short answer and essay questions, to allow the students to demonstrate, in their own words, their understanding of a particular part of the course content.

Waiting Period for Multiple Attempt Exams

Consider enabling the waiting period option to 1 day. This would require students completing multiple attempt assessments to wait one day from their first attempt to complete their second attempt. Having students wait a period between attempts allows them to review any missed content before their next attempt and prevents them from looking through the questions and answers on their first attempt and quickly taking their second attempt during the same appointment time.

Please note that off-campus/online students using proctors may be charged fees per appointment, so this option should be used sparingly for students using proctors.
