Palmoil.io publishes monthly Risk Insights reports (RIs), which document on high risk mills and plots/concessions for recent deforestation, historical deforestation, or threatened remaining forest or peat. RIs are linked to a plot/concession or to a mill in proximity to the deforestation event.
You can find RIs on company, processing facility, plot/concession, and mill dashboards. There is also a full list linked from the home page and the navigation bar.
Risk Insight Diagram
The diagram illustrate all of the RI features. The report is designed to be downloaded as a PDF and shared with specific suppliers for comment.
At the top of the RI, you will find general information such as the mill or plot/concession name, ID, the Group and Parent Company, and the distance between the mill and the clearance.
Mill - the name of the mill
Distance from Mill - the distance from the mill to the area of interest in the MRI
Parent Company - the parent company of the mill
RSPO Certification - the RSPO certification status of the mill
ID - the ID of the mill, either a UML ID beginning with PO, or a MapHubs ID beginning with MH
Group - The group company of the mill
Location - the location of the mill, with district, state/province, and country
Risk Type - Indicates if the deforestation is industrial plantation clearance, industrial logging, or other types of risk. This assessment is made by the analyst reviewing the satellite imagery.
An RI includes a brief note from the analyst describing the cause of the deforestation (e.g., smallholders. industrial deforestation. etc), based on their interpretation of satellite scenes.
The contextual map shows the area of interest for the RI as a red point or polygon in context of the surrounding plantations and mills.
The red polygon indicates the area of clearance. The satellite images have the start and end dates that corresponds to the dates of the images. Note the dates may not be exact, in some cases the images are from a monthly mosaic and therefore reflect the earliest and latest possible dates for each image.
The location of the RI (the center point of the red box on the maps) is displayed below the before and after satellite images. The location includes:
GPS coordinates, latitude and longitude in both degrees, minutes, and seconds, and decimate degrees
UTM coordinates
A QR code that can be scanned by mobile phones to view the location on Google Maps and other mapping apps.
A KML file of the polygon can be downloaded from the link
This map shows the estimated distance and travel time. This information is provided by the Mapbox API which is based on OpenStreetMap and may be limited by the quality of the available data.
