    1. Purpose

To ensure that all waste bins are emptied regularly, safely, and hygienically, maintaining a clean and pleasant environment.

    2. Scope

This SOP applies to all staff responsible for cleaning and maintenance across all areas of the premises, including offices, showrooms, toilets, and kitchen areas.

    3. Responsibilities

    • All Staff: Responsible for the proper and timely emptying of all bins.

    • Managers: To ensure this SOP is followed and supplies are adequately stocked.

    4. Frequency

    • General Waste Bins (Weekly): Each employee is required to empty their own/personal bin each Wednesday at 3.40pm prior to afternoon break. The bin must be emptied in the main outside bin for collection.

    • Toilet and Kitchen Bins: Twice daily (midday and end of day) or as needed

    • Recycling Bins: As required or when 75% full

    5. Required Materials

    • Disposable gloves

    • Bin liners (appropriate size and colour coded if needed)

    • Disinfectant spray or wipes

    • Trolley or waste cart (if applicable)

    6. Procedure

    Step 1. Preparation

    • Wear disposable gloves.

    • Prepare a new bin liner for each bin to be emptied.

    • Bring necessary cleaning materials with you.

    Step 2: Remove Waste

    • Open the bin and carefully tie the used liner (avoid spillage).

    • Lift the bag from the bin and place it on the trolley or in the waste cart.

    • For heavy bins, ensure proper lifting technique or request assistance.

    Step 3: Check and Clean

    • Inspect the inside of the bin for spills or residue.

    • If dirty, wipe or spray with disinfectant and allow to dry.

    • Replace with a fresh liner, ensuring it fits securely around the rim.

    Step 4: Dispose of Waste

    • Transport waste bags to the designated waste disposal area or bins (general waste, recycling, etc.).

    • Follow local guidelines for sorting and disposal.

    Step 5: Final Checks

    • Ensure bins are clean and correctly relined.

    • Remove gloves and dispose of them properly.

    • Wash or sanitise hands after completing all bins.

    7. Safety Precautions

    • Always wear gloves when handling waste.

    • Do not overfill bins or bags—this increases the risk of tears or spills.

    • Report any hazardous or unusual waste to the supervisor immediately.

    • Follow manual handling best practices.

    8. Documentation

    • [Optional] Complete a bin-emptying checklist if required.

    • Note any incidents or concerns (e.g., damaged bins, sharp objects) in the cleaning log.

    9. Notes

    • Ensure bins are kept clean and free of odours.

    • Always report supply shortages (liners, gloves, etc.) to the supervisor.
