To ensure the safe and efficient operation of forklifts in the warehouse, including the correct procedure for loading vans, while minimising risks to personnel, equipment, and goods.
This SOP applies to all authorised forklift operators and warehouse staff involved in handling, moving, and loading goods using a forklift.
Forklift Operators: Operate the forklift in accordance with training, maintain awareness of surroundings, and follow all safety rules.
Warehouse Manager: Ensure operators are certified, conduct safety checks, and enforce compliance with this SOP.
All Warehouse Staff: Follow safe working practices and keep work areas clear of obstructions.
Only employees with a valid, in-date RTITB, ITSSAR, AITT, or NPORS forklift licence may operate the forklift.
Refresher training must be undertaken every 3–5 years or after any incident/near miss.
All operators must be familiar with this SOP before starting work.

Always wear the seatbelt.
Keep forks low when travelling (100–150 mm above the floor).
Sound the horn at blind corners and intersections.
Maintain clear visibility – if load blocks vision, drive in reverse.
Avoid sudden braking, sharp turns, or overloading.
Keep a safe distance from pedestrians and other vehicles.
Never allow passengers on the forklift.
Park van on level ground, apply handbrake, and switch off engine.
Chock wheels if on slight incline.
Ensure rear doors are fully open and secured.
Confirm vehicle floor is in good condition and can take load weight.
Approach van straight-on when possible.
Keep forks level with van floor height before entering.
Do not exceed the forklift’s rated capacity.
Enter the van slowly, keeping forks low.
Check load stability and pallet condition before lifting.
Centre forks under the load and tilt slightly back for stability.
Transport load at safe speed to van.
Position load inside van evenly to maintain weight balance.
Place heavier items at the front (closest to the cab).
Avoid stacking loads too high – maintain driver’s rear visibility.
If stacking, ensure stability and use load restraints if required.
Withdraw forks slowly to avoid shifting the load.
Secure the load with straps or bars before closing doors.
Park forklift in designated area.
Lower forks to the ground.
Turn off ignition and remove keys.
Complete post-use check and report any issues.
In case of an accident, stop work immediately and contact the Warehouse Manager.
For spillages, follow spill control procedures.
In case of fire, follow the warehouse fire evacuation plan.
Pre-operational checklists must be completed daily and submitted.
Incident and near-miss reports must be submitted immediately.
