PoE Input and Output allows for PoE passthrough
Daisy chain up to 3 sensors with PoE switch
Daisy chain up to 5 sensors with PoE+ switch
Each sensor gets its own IP address and operates independently
CAT5e/6 cable required (maximum distance from switch to last device in chain has to be within 100 meters/328 feet)
Powered using 12V DC through the included green GPIO contact/relay terminal
Device must first be connected to PoE for initial programming and Wi-Fi setup
After setup, sensor can operate over Wi-Fi for data transmission while powered via 12V DC
Stable and regulated 12V DC power source required
Wi-Fi signal strength at installation location must be strong for reliable operation
No Ethernet connection required after setup
Standard measurements based on 8.5 ft ceiling height
For every additional foot of ceiling height, reduce coverage by 2 feet in all directions
Extension poles available to lower sensor height in rooms with tall ceilings
Ceiling mounting is strongly recommended for optimal 360° coverage
Wall mounting not advised:
Limits detection to 180°
Occupancy visualization and people counting features may not function properly
Recommended Coverage Areas (per sensor):
Nicotine and THC Vape Detection – 12 ft x 12 ft
Loitering and People Counting – 13 ft x 13 ft
Keyword Detection & Audio Analytics – 15 ft x 15 ft
Mount at least 30 inches away from:
Air vents
HVAC exhausts
Automatic air fresheners
Avoid placing sensors near obstructions such as cornered walls, which can reduce detection range and slow response times
The farther the vape event is from the sensor, the longer it will take to trigger an alert
In rooms larger than the recommended coverage area, place sensors strategically over stall areas where activity is most likely
Large or obstructed rooms may require multiple sensors for full coverage and accurate detection
One of the standout features of this device is the occupancy visualization feature, which uses radar to track how many people are in a room, where they are at in the room, and how long they've been there. Follow the below recommendations to optimize the accuracy of this feature.
Radar-Based People Tracking
Uses radar to detect:
How many people are in the room
Where they are located
How long they've been there
Displayed both in Triton Cloud and via RTSP stream into supported VMS systems
Visualization appears as a live room map with real-time occupancy data
Best Performance Conditions:
Works best in open spaces with minimal reflective surfaces
Avoid installing near:
Large mirrors
TVs or display monitors
Glass walls or panels
These reflective surfaces can cause the radar to display a single person as multiple occupants
Avoid installing the sensor directly above the overhead brace or headrail of a bathroom stall, as this can cause inaccuracies and a "ghosting" effect.
Room Orientation for RTSP Mapping:
The orientation of the RTSP stream matches the orientation of the Triton logo on the sensor.
When mounting the sensor, make sure the logo is facing the direction you want to appear at the top of the RTSP stream.
Our vape detection algorithms are trained on real-world vaping events, not artificial “tests.” Blowing directly into the sensor or filling the space with vapor often leads to false impressions because:
Cooldown Timer: Devices include a ~15-minute cooldown period between vape alerts. Repeated “test puffs” during this time won’t trigger new alerts.
Environmental Change Detection: The system looks for changes in air quality. If a room is saturated with constant vapor during a test, it’s unlikely to alert. Real vaping occurs in bursts, which the algorithm is designed to detect.
Masking Effect: Direct blasts of vapor are read as masking behavior, not normal vaping.
Recommendation: We strongly advise against manual vape testing. Instead, rely on real-world use — when sensors are installed according to specifications (height, coverage, and placement), they will perform reliably
