Contact your instructor and let them know you live outside the City of Ames and need to use an in-person, off-campus proctor. Instructors choose the method of proctoring for their courses.
Your instructor will provide you with the Proctoring Method Form. You will use this form to provide the Testing Center with information about the proctoring method you are using.
The Testing Center will verify that your address on record is outside the City of Ames as this qualifies you for the in-person, off-campus proctoring process.
Once a decision is made (approve or reject), you will be notified via your Iowa State University email account. Please check your spam folder. If approved, the Testing Center will add proctoring options to your profile within SmarterProctoring for the particular exam or course you've indicated in your submission form.
It is important for you to keep and review the emails you receive from the Testing Center as it contains helpful information on next steps.
SmarterProctoring provides you with pre-existing and pre-approved proctors within the system. Click on the "Reviewing & Selecting Pre-existing Proctors within SmarterProctoring" link below to view a step-by-step guide on this process.
IMPORTANT: You must be approved for in-person, off-campus proctoring before searching the system for pre-existing or pre-approved proctors. This ensures that you can access all available proctors.
Reviewing & Selecting Pre-existing Proctors within SmarterProctoringIf you are unable to find a pre-existing or pre-approved proctor near you and you can find a proctor in your area that meets Testing Center requirements, you can submit a proctor approval request to the Testing Center.
Once you've located a proctor who meets Testing Center requirements:
Contact the proctor to determine if they are able to proctor your exam according to Testing Center policy and instructor standards.
Fill out the "In-person, off-campus proctor information" form at least 5 days prior to your exam opening. NOTE: A link to this form is contained within the approval email you will receive from the Testing Center.
If approved, the Testing Center will add the proctor to your SmarterProctoring account and they will receive the appropriate testing information for your exam. If rejected, you are able to submit additional proctor requests through the same form provided to you in your original approval email from the Testing Center.
Please note the appointment date and time in the email you and the proctor receive may not be the actual appointment date and time you schedule with your proctor. The Testing Center is not aware of the actual date and time of your session so a placeholder date and time is used instead.
Please confirm with your proctor that they have received the testing information prior to your scheduled exam appointment.
If a suitable proctor cannot be found through options 1 or 2 above, the Testing Center will refer you back to your instructor. Instructors may, at their discretion, approve proctors that do not meet Testing Center standards. In those situations, the instructor would work directly with you and your proctor to provide them with the necessary information for you to take your exam.
Please email [email protected] for any questions about the process or where your requests stand.
