Canvas LMS is the Northeast learning management system that provides educators and students with a variety of tools and features to enhance the teaching and learning experience. Canvas can be accessed through a web browser on any device or a dedicated Canvas Student App on a mobile phone or iPad. In this overview, we will explore the key differences between using Canvas LMS in a web browser and using it on the iPad app.
1. User Interface and Navigation:
When accessing Canvas LMS through a web browser, users will experience a desktop-like interface with a familiar layout and navigation menu. Canvas is compatible with all web browsers. Users have the advantage of a larger screen, which allows for more content to be displayed simultaneously. This can be particularly useful when viewing complex course materials or participating in discussions.
The Canvas student app on the iPad app offers a more streamlined and touch-friendly interface optimized for mobile devices. The app features a simplified menu and navigation options that are specifically designed for the iPad's touch screen, making it easy for users to navigate through their courses, assignments, and other features.
2. Multitasking and Split View:
When using Canvas in a web browser, users can switch between multiple tabs or windows. In the Canvas student app however, split view can be used to open Canvas LMS alongside another app, making it possible to reference course materials while taking notes or conducting research. View the video below for a quick tutorial on using Split View.
4. Completing Assignments
Canvas LMS offers robust file management and integration capabilities, regardless of whether it is accessed through a web browser or the iPad app. Users can upload, organize, and share files within their courses, making it easy to distribute resources and collaborate with others.
5. Beware of the "To-Do List."
Whether your using the Canvas Student app or a web browser, sometimes the to-do list on the dashboard of Canvas will not show all assignments. We strongly encourage students to work through Modules when completing coursework. Modules will house all the course resources for the class and you will use these resources when completing assignments.
