Steps and Considerations for Reporting Work-Based Learning Experiences

Reporting Work-Based Learning (WBL) experiences is crucial to ensure accuracy, compliance, and proper tracking of student progress and achievements. Here are the detailed steps and considerations for effective reporting:

  1. Collection and Documentation:

    • Data Entry: Record all WBL experiences in the Student Management Information System (PowerSchool) on the WBL page.

    • Consistent Reporting: Ensure data is collected for all students participating in WBL experiences, from K-12.

    • Completion Requirement: Only fully completed WBL experiences should be entered to maintain accuracy.

  2. Types of WBL Experiences:

    • Report various state-approved WBL experiences such as apprenticeships, co-ops, internships, job shadowing (both on-site and virtual), school-based enterprises, service learning, mentoring, structured field studies, and CTE internship credit-bearing courses.

    • Career Ready Qualifiers: By grade 12, students may demonstrate career readiness by completing a South Carolina-approved career ready WBL experience, such as a registered apprenticeship, youth apprenticeship, co-op, or internship(2023-24 SC WBL Implemen…).

  3. Detailed Entry Requirements:

    • Training Agreement: Include an industry evaluation developed from the training agreement, aligned with the world-class skills from the Profile of the SC Graduate.

    • Supervision: Ensure each student is supervised by a content-specific, certified teacher.

    • Course Alignment: WBL placements must align with the student's Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) and pathway.

  4. Regular Updates:

    • Quarterly Data Collection: Enter each WBL experience at the time of completion to ensure data is up-to-date for the Quarterly Data Collection (QDC4) report.

    • Work-Site Visits: Conduct and document regularly scheduled and unannounced work-site visits by the supervising teacher.

  5. Special Considerations:

    • Insurance: Provide Certificates of Insurance Liability and evidence of student insurance coverage for WBL participation.

    • Summer Experiences: Hours from summer WBL experiences, starting on July 1, may count toward the required hours for the school year if all guidelines are followed.

  6. Accountability and Compliance:

    • PowerSchool Entry: All WBL experiences must be reported in PowerSchool to comply with the South Carolina Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) of 2005.

    • CCR Field: Use the Career Ready (CCR) Qualifier fields to report the career ready qualifying WBL experiences(2023-24 SC WBL Implemen…).

Following these steps ensures the accurate and compliant reporting of WBL experiences, which is essential for student accountability and successful transition from education to career pathways.
