View Attachments in Transactions - You can now review and upload attachments in generate.TAX without having to open Xero. We're continuing to improve the review process to make processing your VAT returns easier and faster. This addition means less time shifting between different systems to review the return before submitting.

Watch the video to find out how to check attachments in a submission.

Load Tax Rates - New entities on the global Xero edition only contain a few tax rates. You can now use generate.TAX to choose the tax rates you wish to create and push these directly into the new entity in Xero.

You can create your own template to use for new entities, or you can use the ones provided by generate.TAX. When using the latter, we also handle the automatic loading of the mapping on the VAT return screen.

New Filter - A new filter to assist in the review process has been included in the submissions page. Filterting transactions by the date the journal was created (Created Date) will help the reviewer look for any new transactions that need to be reviewed.

This release also includes various small improvements and bug fixes:

  • Guiding user when the entity has been disconnected when you open a submission.

  • Loading a previously submitted return will now be significantly faster. Transactions and Exceptions will not be downloaded initially to ensure that access to the return numbers is quick. If you need to check the transactions, you can download them separately.

Release: 29th April 2025

Chrome Extension - generate.TAX VAT Submitter Helper - Until today, for a return to be fully submitted, each box from a VAT return generated by generate.TAX had to be manually copied one by one as the numbers were shifted into the tax authorities' portal.

This is no longer necessary! A new submission helper has been created to help you copy all the numbers with one click and easily paste these numbers into the corresponding boxes in the tax authorities' VAT return with another click of a button.

Submitted returns will now have this new feature:

Opening the Chrome extension:

Post a Manual Journal in Xero - Once a return is ready to be submitted, you now have the option of immediately posting a manual journal in Xero. Depending on whether you have VAT payable or receivable, the amount will be shifted between the VAT control account and an account of your choice.

Note: This functionality is initially available for Malta Article 10 VAT Return. All other returns will be added within a few days.

The Netherlands VAT return has now been added to generate.TAX - all functionality available in other regions including Accrual and Cash accounting and reverse charge are enabled for this region.

This release also includes various small improvements and bug fixes:

  • Various Guides available across the pages to help new users navigate through the different functionality.

  • In the Exceptions tab of a submission, you now have the ability to select all transactions and apply changes together - this is particularly helpful when you have hundreds of out of period transactions.

  • Malta & Ireland VIES Return (Recap Statement) has an option to export the return with suppliers to XML - this can be uploaded in the ROS portal.

Release: 5th March 2025

Exceptions - A highly requested feature was the ability to handle out-of-period transactions that were already flagged by generate.TAX and logged as exceptions when creating tax submissions. This area has now been rebuilt with the following new functionality:

  • New algorithm to detect and flag out-of-period transactions based on when the previous tax submission was created and submitted.

  • Ability to mark Exceptions as an adjustment to a previous period

  • Ability to include Exceptions to the existing return (in cases where this is within the tollerance allowed)

  • Postpone decision to the next submission

These transactions can be marked individually or in bulk:

Adjustments to previous periods are clearly marked and linked to the previous period once a return is submitted.

How to handle Exceptions in your Tax Submissions

Tax Submission - The transactions and exceptions data tables have now been modified to show more columns and to include horizontal scrolling. It is now easier to investigate specific transactions without the need to download all transactions.

In addition, all tables now also include the option to change how many transactions to show on screen.

Creating and opening a tax submission is now significantly faster - we have improved the underlying architecture to allow better access to the information you need as fast as possible.

Tax Submission > Mapping Tab - This revew tab summarises the mapping of the various tax rates used to generate the tax submission. This will be saved together with the tax submission and will serve as an audit of the mapping.

Adding a Return - The mapping screen for adding a new return has been optimized to make better use of the available space. It is now easier to book an onboarding session or take an interactive tour on how to map an entity.

This release also includes various small improvements and bug fixes:

  • Owner can disable the SSO for a user who is having problems to login.

  • Malta recapitulative statement - ability to export the report in xml for uploading the government portal.

  • Page preferences are now remembered across the different pages.

  • VAT Number checker improvements.

Release: 17th December 2024

Login with Microsoft - We are committed to simplifying how users securely sign up and log in to generate.TAX. In addition to Xero and Google authentication, this release introduces the ability to use your Microsoft account.

The new "Continue with Microsoft" button allows you to log in seamlessly using your Microsoft Work account, ensuring a smoother and faster experience when preparing VAT submissions.

Various improvements to the VAT Number checker:

  • You can tag specific Customers or Suppliers and mark them as 'hidden' to exclude them from the daily validation checks. The "Hide Selected" button activates when you select a Customer or Supplier from the list.

  • Ability to Export the list of Customers and Suppliers to a csv.

Client Approval - An improved experience for clients who need to approve the VAT submissions in the approval workflow.

Xero App Store - The generate.TAX listing on the Xero marketplace has been updated and you may now leave a review by following the Xero generate.TAX page.

This release also includes various small improvements and bug fixes:

  • You can now configure all lists and tables to display more results per page. Your selection is automatically saved for future use.

  • Displaying the Recap Statements in the new formats.

  • Various new and improved help messages across the tool.

Release: 5th November 2024

Reverse Charge - The engine launched in the previous release as a trial in Malta has now been extended to the following countries:

  • Ireland

  • Cyprus

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)

  • Isle of Man

  • Jersey

Major tax engine update - A major update to the generate.TAX engine enhances the calculation of amounts, tax, and box values on tax returns. This update not only improves performance in generating returns but also resolves issues in specific accounting cases that previously caused incorrect values.

This version requires an additional setup step in the mapping screen, with a new option available to specify input and output tax rate types.

Note: If these tax rates are not mapped correctly, the boxes in the tax return will display incorrect positive or negative values.

Select the tax rates and use the arrows to move them between 'Input' and 'Output'. In the Tax Rate Mapping box on the right hand side, you may also toggle between input tax (arrow pointing left) or output tax (arrow pointing right).

This release also includes various small improvements and bug fixes:

  • Improved filters are now available across all pages.

  • User preferences will now be remembered on each page.

  • In the tax return, the "view mode" (eye icon) enables transaction drill-down.

  • PDF files generated on the tax submission screen have been optimized, reducing their file size significantly.

Release: 15th October 2024

Reverse Charge - a new engine handling the reverse charge has been implemented which caters for situations where this is taken care of within the accounting software or if this will need to be handled by generate.TAX. The following option is now available in the mapping page:

The respective tax rates must first be mapped to the correct boxes, and then there is the option to select the applicable rates through the right hand window pane and include the tax rate to be applied and calculated in the Output and Input tax boxes.

This solution has only been made available on the Malta Article 10 VAT return - the mapping screen of all entities needs to change as the reverse charge boxes will no longer be automatically calculated. The Output and Input VAT boxes need to be manually mapped.

In addition, system will now prompt to save the mapping if you try to exit before saving.

Export Tax Submission - The Export to PDF was made available earlier this month. In addition, a new export to Excel option has been added - this creates a file with the filled in VAT return and includes all transactions and exceptions. Useful feature requested by many accountants.

Mapping Tab - After a Tax Submissions is saved, the mapping of that tax submission is now added to the screen as a new tab - this is important so you can easily refer to this tab to double check the mapping on how this submission was calculated.

In addition, system will now prompt to save tax submission if you try to exit before saving.

VAT Number Checker - Various small changes to the filters and the front screen.

My Profile - This page has been upgraded with a login history showing login details for all your account and all system users. This improves the security of the application and ensures any unauthorised access can be flagged. Also includes other small improvements to the My Profile page.

This release also includes various small improvements and bug fixes. Also includes this new section documention What's New.
