How to Create a Data Source and Map a Template

Tip! This guide is the manual process for creating a data source and mapping a template. You may skip many of these steps using the Automap feature in your newly created merit template. Automap automatically creates a data source and only requires your input to map the fields to the source. To follow the steps for the Automap feature instead, search in the [help center, ](https://knowledge.merits.com/)*How to Automap a Merit Template*.
**Before creating a data source:** Ensure a merit template is created and published. Search in the [help center ](https://knowledge.merits.com/)*How to Create a Merit Template* if it has not.
      Navigate to <https://admin.merits.com>
      Click "Create & Configure"
      Click "Data Sources"
      Click "Create data source"
Click "Name \*" and enter the name of your data source
Click "Description" and enter the description of your data source - this step is optional
      Click "Add column"
Type "First Name" and select the Data type
These are the field data types available for use
      Click "Text"
Click "Add column" and repeat this step for every field in your merit template. **As a reminder, First Name, Last Name, and Email are all required fields.**
At least one field must be designated as the Unique identifier. This is normally the Email field but may also be something like a member or employee ID or a certification number.
For this instance, select the box next to Email as the Unique identifier.
When adding date fields, you have the choice of two date formats to choose from.
A format **must** be selected. Click "YYYY-MM-DD" for this instance. It is also the default format.
Tip! Make sure your spreadsheet date columns are formatted to match the selected date format prior to downloading the CSV file. Otherwise, a merit send error may result.
Once all the fields are added, click "Create" at the bottom-right of the screen
