      How to Create a Field

Create all the fields you might need before you start creating merit templates. A good way to know what fields to create is to look at your data in a spreadsheet. **Every column header except first name, last name, and email in your spreadsheet is a field that should be created!**
      Navigate to [https://admin.merits.com/org-settings](https://org.stellar2-s.merits.dev/org-settings)
Click "Create & Configure" at the top right-side of the page
      Click "Fields"
      Click "Create field"
Click "Name \*" and type the name of your field
Click "Description" and enter the field description (this is optional)
      Click "Data type\*"
Select the data type for this field
These are the field data types available for use
Select the permissions for this field

      Click "Add Rule"

As an example, we'll set a rule so this field will make a merit active or inactive based on the date.
Alert! Setting a rule for a field will filter the data if it doesn't meet the rule's requirement. For example, if the merit is expired, the record for that merit will not show the date. If you want the date to show if it has expired, set the expiration date rule in the merit template instead. Check out our "How to Create Merit Templates" guide in the [help center](https://knowledge.merits.com/) to learn how!
Select the dropdown and click "is after today"
Click "Error message" and type "Must have a value before today"
      Click "Create"
