To get started, open your document in Google Docs.
Margin options will be under the Page Setup Dialog. To open this, select File at the top left corner of your window.
Then select Page setup from the drop-down menu.
You will see your margins here. The default for Google Docs is 1 inch. To change them, you'll have to set the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right individually.
If you want half inch margins, you would type "0.5"
    Repeat this for each margin.
Once you have all of your margins set, hit OK to confirm the changes.
Now you will notice that your margins are much smaller. Feel free to tweak the individual margins to get your desired level.
