There are plenty of times you may want to check the word count in your document, for various purposes such as meeting word count requirements for assignments or tracking progress during writing. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to check the word count in Google Docs.

Start by opening your document in Google Docs.

Click "Tools" from the toolbar across the top of your window.

Select Word count from the drop-down.

Your word count will be displayed here. You can also check the box so that you can see your word count as you are typing.

Click "OK" when you are done.

You can also highlight a section of text if you only want to view the word count for that specific portion of text.

Locate the Word count option the same as before.

You'll see the word count only for your highlighted portion of text.

Alternatively, you can view your word count using a keyboard shortcut to save time.

Press [[cmd]] + [[shift]] + [[c]] and the word count dialog window should open.

Click "OK" when you are done.
