**What is Node.js and npm?**

**Node.js** is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 engine that allows you to run JavaScript outside the browser. It is commonly used for building server-side applications, backend services, and command-line tools.

**npm (Node Package Manager)** is the default package manager for Node.js, used to install, manage, and share JavaScript libraries and dependencies. It simplifies project management by allowing developers to install and update packages easily.

On the **Node.js download** page, click on the **macOS Installer (.pkg)** button to download the installer for macOS.

**What is the difference between the macOS Installer (.pkg) and the Standalone Binary (.gz) for Node.js?**

The **macOS Installer (.pkg)** is a packaged installer that sets up Node.js on macOS with all necessary dependencies, configurations, and system integrations, making installation easier for most users. It automatically adds Node.js and npm to the system **PATH**, so you can use them from the terminal immediately.

The **Standalone Binary (.gz)** is a compressed file containing the precompiled Node.js binary without an installer. It is useful for advanced users who want to manually extract and run Node.js without modifying the system or installing additional dependencies.

**Download wizard** will open, click on the **Applications** option on the left bar and click on the **Save** button

Go to your **Applications** folder in Finder and double-click **"node-v22.14.0.pkg"** to start the Node.js installation process.

**Note:** The recorded demo uses Node.js v22.14.0, but the actual installed version may vary depending on the latest available release at the time of installation.

**Nodejs installation** wizard will open, click on the **Continue** button

**Licence page** will open, click on the **Continue** button

**Terms and Conditions** prompt will appear, Click the **Agree** button to accept the terms and proceed with the installation.

**Installation type** page will open, click on the **Install** button

You will be prompted to verify the installation by entering your **macOS password**.

**Why does Node.js require my macOS password during installation?**

When installing Node.js via the **.pkg** installer, it requires administrative privileges to modify system directories, such as `/usr/local/bin/` (where Node.js and npm are typically installed). Since these locations affect system-wide access, macOS prompts for your password to ensure that only an authorized user can make these changes. This security measure prevents unauthorized modifications to critical system files.

After the installation is complete, click the **Close** button to exit the installation wizard.

Open the **Terminal** and type `node --version` to check the installed Node.js version.
