Navigate spreadsheet of the Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint Task Team.

This spreadsheet is being sent to modelling centres to complete as part of the CMIP7 AFT and ongoing CMIP7 phase experiments. The aim is to collect information that allows the Task Team to estimate the energy usage and therefore the carbon footprint of CMIP7 HPC experiments.

Open your spreadsheet and click the "**General Information**" tab.

Under general information at the top you will find a **Zenodo** link. This will take you to the Guidelines and best practice document. This document gives all the information you need on how to calculate the Tier 1, 2 and 3 metrics.

The second row at the top contains a link to the **Frequently Asked Questions** (FAQ) this will be populated over time with questions and answers from users. The third row has the email address to use with any questions for the Task Team.

Go to 'Modelling Group Information'. In box 1 enter your modelling group name e.g. ECMWF, CAMS, CERFACS etc. In box 2 enter the modelling centre location and country. E.g. Hamburg, Germany. In box 3 enter the contact email of the person completing the spreadsheet. Finally in box 4 enter your HPC platform name.

Go to the 'HPC center information'. There are multiple rows for entering your HPC platform name(s) e.g. machine 1, machine 2 etc. In box 2, enter the platform name, you can do this for each machine. In box 3, enter your city and country. Copy to fill the rows below if they are in the same city and country. In box 4 enter a **Power Usage Effectiveness** (PUE) value. Please see the link in the Guidelines document for an explanation of PUE. If you have multiple machines, please enter a value for each one. In box 5 enter an **Emission Factor** for each machine. For help on Emission Factors, please see the Guidelines document link at the top of the sheet. If you have multiple machines, please enter a value for each one.

In boxes 6 - 11 enter the percentage of the different energy sources for your HPC facility (if known). For instructions on estimating the energy mix, see the Guidelines document at the top of the sheet. If you have multiple machines, please enter a value for each one. In the last box, please enter the source of information for your energy mix. This could be text or a link to a energy provider website for example. If you have multiple machines, please enter a value for each one.

Click on the "Experiment Metrics" tab.

**Tier 1 metrics are 'Strongly Recommended**' and the minimum information needed to work out a carbon footprint of the HPC experiments. Beginning with Setup 1 (**a Setup is a group of Experiments of the same type, e.g. Production, Tuning or Discarded, run with the same mode and on the same Machine**) under 'Platform Name' click on the dropdown and choose the machine name - this information is taken from your entry in the 'General Information' tab.

In box 2 enter the 'Experiment Type'. Click on the dropdown and there are three options; 'Production', 'Tuning' or 'Discarded'. Please complete for each of your Setups.

In box 3 enter your 'Model Name'. In box 4 under 'Simulated Years' enter the number of years e.g. 100. In box 5 under 'Core Hours' enter the total core hours e.g. 13000. In box 6, under 'Data Output' enter the value in Gigabytes e.g. 4000. In box 7 under 'Energy Consumption', enter a value in Megajoules. For information on how to work our the energy consumption, please refer to the Guidelines document Please enter a value for each Setup.

Go to Tier 2 columns. **Tier 2 metrics are 'Recommended'** and give additional valuable information for understanding energy use and the carbon footprint. For more information on Tier 2 Metrics, please see the Guidelines document in the link on Tab 1' General Information'. To start, In box 1 under 'Simulated Years Per Day (SYPD)' enter the value e.g. 12.

In box 2 under 'Queue Simulated Years Per Day (QSYPD)' enter a value e.g. 10.5. In box 3 under 'Real Simulated Years Per Day (RSYPD)' enter a value e.g. 9.5. In box 4 under 'Parallelisation' enter a value for the number of cores e.g. 500. In box 5 under 'Data Output Intensity' enter a value gigabytes per core-hour e.g. 0.05. In box 6 under 'Number of Grid Points' enter a value e.g. 1.5E+06. Please complete for each setup.

Go to the Tier 3 section. **Tier 3 is optional and can be completed if you have the resources to provide this extra granularity**. For further information on how to calculate the Tier 3 Metrics please see the the Guidelines document link on Tab 1 'General Information'. To begin in box 1, under 'Complexity' enter a value e.g. 32. In box 2 under 'Data Output Cost' enter a ratio value, e.g. 0.12. In box 3 under 'Coupling Cost' enter a ratio e.g. 0.12. In box 4 under 'Memory Bloat' please enter a ratio, e.g. 50. Please complete for each Setup.

Finally, the last section on Tab 2 is for entering general comments text related to completing the Tier metrics.

Click "Metrics short descriptions" Tab to find a glossary of the different metrics used throughout the spreadsheet.

Tab 3 "Metrics short descriptions" gives short descriptions of each metric. Please refer to the Guidelines document link on Tab 1 "General information" for further information.
