This training requires that you know how to login to DeltaBreed test servers, create programs and add users, manage programs, use the germplasm template, append germplasm, and use the germplasm detail viewer with pedigree connections. If you need to review previous training modules, return to the [main DeltaBreed training page.](https://scribehow.com/shared/External_v09_Beta_DeltaBreed_Training_Module__ofVnXMjZQce-CFUaDWnc8g)

      Things to remember

Although you can upload individual ontology terms in DeltaBreed, this is not the recommended way to upload most of your terms. Using the template will allow you to import a larger batch file. \ If you find that your breeding program needs to add another individual term, than you can do that within DeltaBreed without using the template.

      Get the Template

      1
In DeltaBreed in the "import data" screen, click on the ontology tab and click on the "download the ontology import template" button on the right hand side of your screen. This will download the ontology import template.

When you've opened the template, you'll notice that it is similar in some ways to the germplasm template. It has a readme tab and a data tab. The ontology template contains an example tab for reference as well.

      Readme Tab

      3
The readme tab contains the column header title, the description, and an example. It also tells whether that information is required for import or not.

Similar to the germplasm template, if there is a "yes, if" next to a field in the ontology template, check the description to learn more about when it needs to be included for successful upload into DeltaBreed. For example, here method formula is required if the method consists of assessing the trait by computing measurements. You would need to write the generic formula used for the calculation.

      Example Tab

      5
In the example tab, there are examples of how you can fill in the fields. For example, the following ontology term has the following information associated with it in the ontology template. Name: Flesh_L\*(C) Full Name: Root Flesh Color (L) Term Type: Phenotype Description: Storage root flesh lightness value on CIE coordinate color space Status: active Tags: favorites; quality Trait Entity: storage root flesh Trait Attribute: color lightness Method Description: colorimeter Method Class: measurement Scale Class: numerical Units: index

      Data Tab

      6
The data tab is where you will input your ontology term and details. Do not use periods (.) or \[ \] in the term names or this will throw an error. For any non-required columns, leave blank. Use of na or NA or "-" or other characters will cause an error upon upload.
