The Mini is an easy-to-use device that distributes your captive portal across your network.

Here is what you need to know: The Mini doesn't need any public or static IP address or forwarded port. It uses a VPN to tunnel network traffic, ensuring no interference with the local network. The Mini relies on TCP and UDP outgoing communication to connect with the internet. These protocols ensure seamless data transmission. For Internet access, the Mini is quite versatile. It requests an IP address via DHCP, adapting to your network. You can connect it to the upstream internet through either Ethernet port. It doesn't matter which one; it's designed to be flexible.

Now let's talk about the Edge Extender, It's another essential piece of the puzzle.

The Edge Extender also requires an internet connection via DHCP. This is vital during its software upgrades during startup.
      3
Unlike the Mini, the Edge Extender must be connected through a specific port. As you face the edge extender from the back, it's the port on your right.

The Edge Extender must be on the same LAN as the Mini, ensuring they work in harmony. It should also have broadcast capability because the Mini sends out periodic beacon messages through each of its ports. To Manage and transmit data, the Edge Extender uses a TCP connection for control with the Mini. but for routing the WiFi traffic back to the Mini, it relies on a GRE tunnel, guaranteeing efficient communication.

The Mini and Edge Extender form a seamless duo, making your network setup a breeze.

      About Third Party Wifi Devices
      information ordinal icon
Routie's captive portal is designed to work seamlessly with third-party WiFi devices, expanding your options for network setup. However, It's important to know that even though the Mini provides the captive portal technology and VPN on third-party devices, it may not encompass all of the advanced features when distributing the internet with our Edge Extenders access points. When integrating third-party WiFi devices, one critical requirement is having a dedicated network for your guest WiFi. This isolation can be achieved through methods like VLANs or physically segregated LANs.

First, connect each Edge Extender to the same LAN as the Mini. Remember, using the correct port on each Edge Extender is crucial to ensure a smooth connection. Next, plug in your Edge Extender. Edge Extenders are powered using power over Ethernet. You can use a PoE power brick or any 48v802.3af or 802.3at standard PoE switch for this purpose.

If you are using the PoE brick provided, then you will want to connect it to your Edge Extender.

Plug the Edge Extender into the port labeled PoE. Then to connect a second Edge Extender, you can connect it to the open port on your first Edge Extender and run the ethernet cord to the port marked LAN on the next PoE brick. Then repeat the process and connect the ethernet from the port marked PoE to the right side port on the next Edge Extender. You can connect as many Edge Extenders as you need, to create coverage around your location. On your Routie dashboard, go to the WiFi tab to check if the Edge Extenders have been activated and are in sync with your network.
