3. Unisphere for PowerMax - Understanding Data Reduction & Capacity Monitoring

In this module using the latest Unisphere for PowerMax you will learn how to access key views and interpret capacity utilization metrics taking into account data reduction achieved on your systems,

In this section the steps will guide you through Data Reduction views and metrics with Unisphere for PowerMax

If you are starting the lab with this section, you will have to first login to the Unisphere UI. Double-click **U4V Demo** icon on the desktop. Login to **Unisphere** with the following settings: - Username: **smc** - Password: **smc** Click **Login**

Investigating System Level Data Reduction Savings

There are multiple ways to view the data reduction savings. However the System Level is the most holistic, giving the overall state of an array and data reduction savings achieved, The following steps will guide you through viewing these displays using Unisphere.

Click **"Dashboard"** from the left hand menu.

Click **Capacity**

The page displayed when clicking the **Capacity** tile from the home dashboard is broken down into 2 sections: **Effective Capacity** - The total represents the total amount of effective used capacity. Effective capacity is limited by physical capacity and effective capacity resources in systems that support data reduction. **Data Reduction** - Data reduction allows users to reduce user data on storage groups and storage resources. Data reduction is enabled by default and can be turned on and off at storage group and storage resource level.

Click **"Provisioned"**

The **Provisioned** percentage is calculated by dividing how much has been provisioned by how much Effective Capacity is on the SRP. This differs from previous generations where provisioned calculations based entirely on Physical Capacity. Click the **back** button

Click **"Effective"**

**Effective** is the total represents the total amount of effective used capacity, capacity that the hosts and application think is in use. Effective capacity is limited by physical capacity and effective capacity resources in systems that support data reduction. The descriptions in the UI will give more detail, take a minute to read. Click the **back** button

Click **Snapshot**

**Snapshot** - This total represents the capacity in use by all existing snapshots on the array. Click the **back** button

Click **"Data Reduction Ratio"**

The data reduction details view provides details about DRR (enabled and reducing), unreducible data, and storage group data reduction.

As well as seeing the overall data reduction ratio, you can see the capacity and data reduction numbers for every storage group on the array in the section highlighted,

You have now completed viewing the Capacity & Data Reduction Savings. To navigate back to the main Unisphere Page, click **Overview**.

Tip! Data reduction can be enabled or disabled on a per storage group basis, however for the most efficient use of your storage resources PowerMax arrays will default to having this setting turned on.

Managing Data Reduction is done at the storage group level. There are a number of existing storage groups on the system. Let's investigate a Storage Group that already has compression enabled (by default it is always enabled) and has a compression ratio. Click on the PowerMax array **000120200107** Click **Storage > Storage Groups**

This view will display all Storage Groups on the system regardless of service level, SRP, or Compliance. Let's investigate **DSE_QE_irco2sd25vm01_112** as this has been running for quite some time and is seeing great benefits from data reduction. Select **DSE_QE_irco2sd25vm01_112**

Tip! For Faster Navigation use the funnel icon on the top right and type a few characters of the Storage Group Name.

We can see in the right hand pane, that this SG is currently getting a data reduction ratio of **16.0:1**. You will have to scroll down on the right hand pane to see this information.

Double-click **"DSA_QE_irco2sd25vm01_112"**

We are brought into the **Properties** page, and displayed in here there are several tabs that can be viewed for different information. There are two sections displayed on this page. The section on the left is the properties list which provides basic information about the Storage Group. The right side of the display provides capacity information. This is where you will see the compression setting and what the storage groups compression ratio is.
