8. Exploring Power and Response Time Metrics in PowerMax OS

This modules provides valuable insights into leveraging power and response time metrics in PowerMax OS, enhancing storage administrators' ability to monitor performance effectively. By utilizing Unisphere’s extensive metric capabilities, users can quickly identify whether performance issues stem from internal components or external factors, ultimately improving troubleshooting efficiency.

Exploring New Power and Response Time Metrics

In this lesson we will explore how to chart performance metrics Unipshere for PowerMax gives storage administrator access to over 1500 metrics relating to the performance and consumption of their storage arrays enabling deep insights into how data is being accessed, the workload profiles of the data, and utilization of the array and components. Unipshere provides three levels of metrics 1. Real Time Metrics at 5 second interval 2. Diagnostic Metrics at 30 intervals, with average or max values 3. Historical Metrics, available for up to 36 months of data. All of these metrics can be charted for user review. In this lesson we will look at charting some newly added metrics based added as enhancements from our customers. The new Metrics added are : - Power Consumption and Heat Generated by PowerMax arrays in British Thermal Units (BTU). - Internal/External Response time delineation, Making it easier to identify if response time issues are internal or external to the array. These metrics are available when customers are running PowerMax OS 10.2 and Unsiphere for PowerMax 10.2 or higher.

If you are starting the lab with this section, you will have to first login to the Unisphere UI. Double-click **U4V Demo** icon on the desktop. Login to **Unisphere** with the following settings: - Username: **smc** - Password: **smc**

From the **Overview** page locate the array **000120200107**, this will be the source array for creating charts. Click on the source array **107**

From the left hand pane click **Performance** then select **Charts** to access the graphing section of Unisphere for PowerMax, from here you can access any of the 1000's of metrics available to PowerMax customers to gain insights into the overall performance of their arrays.

Power and BTU metrics are available under the system category. Let's see how easy it is to access these metrics through charts.

Ensure you have selected **"All"** for **Metrics**

Type **"Power"** to filter the metric list and select **Power Usage** Click **Create** to display the chart

You can add titles to make the charts easy to identify if you are building dashboards with multiple Metrics, type **"Power Usage for Array 107"**

Lets create another chart for the Heat generated by the system in BTU and add to the charts.

Just like before search for the **BTU** metric, select **BTU** and click **Create**

Add a title to uniquely identify the chart - **BTU for array 107**

Breaking out Response times into internal and external metrics

It's now possible to dive deeper into response times for reads and writes on your system breaking out into the internal response time to serve the IO to the host and the external response time, the time on the wire. Making it easier to determine if a high response time is due to an issue on the array or something external. 90% of Performance cases reported to Dell on PowerMax are related to external factors, these new metrics will shorten the time it takes to identify the true source of issues,

The Internal/External response time metrics are available under **System** and **Storage Groups**, so you can see overall or per application, For the demo we will look at the storage group instance of these metrics for a more application centric view. Select the **System > Storage & Hosts> Storage Group** category as shown, you can optionally create a new tab for these metrics or add to the existing,

Search for **RT**

The filtered list makes it easier to see the internal and external metrics for charting as well as the overall response time which is a combination of the two. Select the First Storage group in the List and ensure the checkmark is ticked - **BusIntApp**

Select **Internal Write RT, External write RT** and **Write RT**. Click **Create** to display the chart

Repeat the process for read response times Select **Internal Read RT, External Read RT** and **Read RT**.

Examine the charts you have created.

That's it, charting any metric in Unisphere is easy, you can play with the UI of check out the help to explore what else is available to you. The inbuilt dashboards and pre created views are also there to save you any work. As always everything you have just done in the UI is available through our REST API too,
