Add a Tracking Category to an Invoice Line Item

This guide provides a step-by-step instruction on how to add a Tracking Category to an Invoice Line Item in Salesforce, enhancing your data organisation and accuracy.

Create a Tracking Category Field

Log into your Salesforce, for this example it doesn't matter what App you are on

Click on the Setup Cog

Click "Setup"

Click "Object Manager"

Click the "Quick Find" field

Type "Invoice Line Item"

Click "Invoice Line Item"

Click "Fields & Relationships"

Click "New"

A Tracking Category field should be a Picklist Field to ensure static values are selected maintaining data integrity and removing the risk of human error

Select "Picklist"

Click "Next"

Click the "Field Label" field

Enter a Name for the Field, in this example we are going to use "Tracking Category"

Click "Enter values, with each value separated by a new line" if you would like to define your own Picklist options, or if you have a Global Value Set then skip the next 2 Steps

In the Text area, enter as many Picklist options as you like, each option must be on it's own line

Click "Next"

Click "Next" again

Copy the "Field Name" and save this for later, then click "Save"

Add the Tracking Category to the New/Edit Screen

Click "Home"

Click the "Quick Find" field.

Type "Custom Metadata Types"

Click "Metadata"

Click "Manage Records"

Click "New"

Click the "Label" field

Enter a Label that will help you understand what this Record Detail Config is used for

Click the "Xero Record Detail Config Name" field to allow Salesforce to auto-populate it

Leave the Config Type set as "Tracking Category", then in the "Object" picklist select the "Invoice Line Item \[xis\]" option

Click the "Value" field

Paste/type in the Field Name of the field that you just created ensuring that it ends with \__c, in our example we have used "Tracking_Category__c"

Click "Save"

Go back to the Salesforce front end and find an Invoice, or create a new one, you should now see a new Picklist has appeared, where you can select the Tracking Category for an Invoice Line Item
