Create a Canva Assignment via Canvas (Teacher Directions)

Use these instructions to assign a Canva assignment to students in Canvas. When using this method, all students will get their own copy of the Canva template. Yes, I understand that people may find this confusing since Canva & Canvas have very similar names. CANVA is a design suite. CANVAS is a learning management system. You can give a design-based assignment using Canva & assign it in Canvas

Instructure

Tip! It's okay, actually great, if you want to make the activity in Canva in advance, but to start the integration process, you'll have to go to Canvas first! If you share directly from Canva, these are the only share options. If you share via the link (the "old way"), the process won't be as seamless and SpeedGrader wont be an option.

Go to the Canvas course where you want to make a Canva assignment.

Create or find the "Canva Assignment." For the sake of this Scribe, I had an assignment already started so I double-clicked **"Canva Resume Example Assignment"** to edit it.

Click the **"Edit"** (pencil) button.

Add Assignment Directions

In the Rich Text Editor box it's not only a good idea to include specific instructions for the the assignment, but to also give instructions how students work in Canva to complete the assignment. Especially if the Canva Assignment in Canvas process is new, it's a good idea to tell students that: - They will get their own original copy of the Canva assignment to work on - They will work directly in that Canva template until it's time to submit - They will need to submit the assignment though Canvas (tell them how)

Add a Template Preview to Directions

If you want to give students a visual preview of the Canva template, you can do that by clicking the **"extension"** (plug) icon or the blue icon that says Canva. Please note that this is **NOT** the way you will assign the Canva assignment. This only gives students a preview. (In fact, it will remind you that this is not the way to share a copy with all students will a message. (See the next Scribe step.) Click **"Canva for Education."**

Tip! Here's a friendly reminder how to give all students a copy. If you don't want to see this reminder in the future, check this box. Click the purple "Continue to Embed" button to finish embedding the preview of the Canva template.

From here you can retrieve your existing template or create one.

Select the item you want to preview with students. A copy will now be seen in the rich text editor box.

Give Students Their Own Copy of a Template

The part that gives all students a copy of the Canva template is changing the **"Submission Type"** to the **"External Tool"** option. Then click **"Find."**

All the possible external tools will appear in an alphabetical list. Click **"Canva Education."** It will automatically launch to your Canva account.

After clicking **"Canva Education,"** a pop-up will appear allowing you to choose an existing design, a design someone has shared with you or a Canva item you're making from scratch on the fly. The options are listed in the left column. Click on the item you want to use. As soon as you click on the item, it'll automatically be integrated. (If you choose **"Create,"** you can use one of Canva's templates as-is, use a template and tweak it or give all students a blank item only with designated specifics like item type & size.)

Click **"Select."**

Before you save, edit your remaining assignment settings as desired: points, assignment groups, attempts, sync, due dates, etc. Click **"Save"** or **"Save & Publish."** Choose **"Save & Publish."** if you want to test it from **"Student View."** (Please note that if you do this and want to keep students from seeing into the assignment, you'll want to tweak your **"Available from"** dates to keep it hidden until you're ready to share it.

See the Canva Assignment from a Teacher POV

**Teacher POV:** The top of the screen will include the assignment name and anything you included in the "Rich text editor." In this case you can see the directions and the preview I also included. It also has buttons to: - View as Student - Edit Assignment Settings - Go to SpeedGrader

**Teacher POV:** The bottom of the screen will include anything your Canva template. The cool thing is you can actually click into it to alter things BEFORE you share with students. (It won't change student work after they've made their own copies.) This has the same functionality as if you're working directly in Canva. Chances are you will have to enlarge the template to work though. Click on the **"View as Student"** to see the assignment from a Student POV.

**Student POV:** Just like the teacher POV, the top of the screen will include the assignment name and anything you included in the "Rich text editor." In this case you can see the directions and the preview I also included. It also has buttons to:

**Student POV:** The bottom of the screen will house the students individual copy of the template. They will be able edit it right here in the Canvas assignment. This document has the same Canva editing functionality.
