Create a Turnitin Assignment with a Rubric

Navigate to a Moodle course and turn editing on.

Click the add activity plus button.

Click "Activity or resource"

Click "Activities"

Click the Turnitin activity from the chooser

Click "Select content"

Enter the title of the assignment that your students will see in the "Title" field.

Click the "Max Grade" field and add the point value for the assignment.

Add appropriate dates in the "Start Date," "Due Date" and "Feedback Release Date" fields. Use the blue question mark icons to get further information about each date field.

Click "Optional Settings"

In the "Submit papers to" field, select the drop down menu.

Use the question mark to clarify the difference between "Institution paper repository" and "Do not store the submitted papers." **TIP** - If students will submit a draft and a final paper in two different Turnitin Assignments, then set the "Submit papers to" field to "Do not store the submitted papers" in the draft assignment.

Choosing "Allow submission of any file type" means that students can upload files that cannot be scanned by Turnitin to generate a Similarity Report. Unchecking this box means students can only submit files that allow Turnitin to generate a Similarity Report.

Make determinations related to late submission or anonymous marking. Use the blue question mark icons for more information.

Click the "Attach a rubric" checkbox to add a rubric to the assignment. You will be able to choose from a rubric template, create a rubric, or use a rubric created for a past assignment.

Click "Launch Rubric Manager" to edit rubrics or create new rubrics.

This is an example of a rubric from the Turnitin Rubric Manager, you can also click "Create new rubric" to start from scratch.

In the Similarity Report options, we recommend that you select the "Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until due date)" option to allow students the most opportunities to improve their writing based on reviewing the report.

Click the "Allow students to view Similarity Reports" to provide students with the feedback from Turnitin.

The "Exclude" options will allow you to refine what is reviewed in a paper for similarity. Click on each blue question mark icon for further information.

Templates allow you to add assignment directions that all students will include in their writing so they are not matched for similarity. For example, if students are completing a proposal that has standard text that will appear in each student's work, upload a template with that language so that Turnitin will ignore it.

Complete the settings and click "Submit." Note that you can make these settings your default settings for each Turnitin assignment by choosing "Save these settings for future use."

Set each of the Moodle-specific settings after finishing the Turnitin settings. Choosing "Display activity description when students access the tool" will allow them to see the "Instructions" you have already typed in the Turnitin assignment.

Click "Grade" and adjust any settings for the Moodle Gradebook.

Click "Completion conditions"

Click the "Add requirements" field and set any requirements, i.e. "Students must manually mark the activity as done" or "Students must view the activity."

NOTE!! Students can find the due date of a Turnitin assignment by opening it and then expanding the assignment details. If you want students to see the date in Moodle without needing to click twice in the assignment, you can add the due date to the title of the assignment and/or add "Set reminder in Timeline" in the "Completion conditions" of the Turnitin assignment and it will then appear in their Moodle calendar.

Click "Save and return to course" or "Save and display"
