Create a Turnitin assignment in Canvas

Go to [Canvas](https://canvas.maastrichtuniversity.nl/) and open the course where you want to create a Turnitin assignment.

Click 'Assignments' in the course menu.

Click on '+ Assignment' to create a new assignment.

Fill in the assignment name.

Check 'Tekst entry' or 'File Uploads' in the online entry options. Turnitin is only available for these types.

Choose the allowed submission attempts. **Limited**: the student is only able to hand in the assignment once. **Unlimited**: the student can hand in the assignment multiple times. Every attempt will be checked against plagiarism. Multiple attempts do not affect the similarity score, because new attempts are not compared to previous attempts.

Choose 'Turnitin' for Plagiarism Review.

Choose whether you want to exclude the **Bibliography** and **Quotes** from the Similarity Reports. By default, the Bibliography and Quotes are not excluded from the Similarity Reports. Why? Because Turnitin can detect false references and show red flags, such as quotation marks that are used to bypass the plagiarism check. Later in the process, you are always able to exclude the Bibliography and Quotes from the Similarity report in the SpeedGrader per student.

Choose whether you want to **index all submissions** to the Turnitin Database. When checked, student assignments will be added to the general Turnitin Database. This will allow for Turnitin to grow their database, so that more plagiarism can be detected. For example: if a paper is indexed, Turnitin will detect papers that are handed in multiple times by students among various courses.

Decide when you want to generate the Similarity Reports. It is recommended to choose '**immediately and on due date**'. This allows for a collusion check within your course.

Choose whether you want to show the report to students. The default setting is '**Never**'.

It is also possible to show the report: Immediately, After the assignment is graded or after the due date.

Give the assignment a due date.

Click 'Save & publish'. The assignment is now available for students to hand in their paper.
