Creating a discussion assignment with Harmonize Assignment on Canvas.

Navigate to [https://virginiacommonwealth.instructure.com/](https://virginiacommonwealth.instructure.com/) and click on the desired course

Click "Modules"

Navigate to the desired module and click on the + sign in the top right corner to create the discussion

Click "[ Create Assignment ]"

Add an assignment name for your discussion Click "Add Item"

Click on the assignment that was just created Click "Edit" Click this dropdown. Click "Find" Click "Harmonize Assignment"

Choose the option that best fits your needs. For this example, we will choose a discussion Click "Select"

Add additional assignment details as needed. (Point value, assignment grouping, grade display, and final due date). Then click "Save"

Click here and type in your discussion board prompt and any necessary instructions.

If there are files that you would like to include, Click "Drop files or click to browse" to add them to the discussion. You can also choose to add pdfs, images, links, polls, or annotations by using the blocks at the bottom as well.

Let's add a YouTube video. Click "Add Link" and paste the link into the field

Click "Post Settings"

If you would like students to make their initial post before seeing their peers', Click the "Hide all posts and comments from students who have NOT posted yet" field.

In the Visibility Settings section, you can choose who your students will participate with. The most common selection is students in the same section. However, you may want to use students in the same group for group-specific projects or private if using the platform for a presentation type of assignment.
Setting Up Assignment Milestones & Auto-Grading Information
Tip! Milestones are a great way for students to see exactly when each step of a discussion is due. As the instructor, you can set individual due dates for each portion of an assignment. Those dates will also sync with students' Canvas To-Do lists and Calendars.

Click "Milestone Due Dates & Auto-Grading"

Click "Add Milestone"
Tip! In this example, we will be setting up a discussion that has students make 1 initial post and 2 comments to their peers. Please adjust these guidelines to match your assignment.

For the first milestone, we will set up the peer responses. Click "plus" next to comments to match the assignment guidelines.

Now let's set up the milestone for the initial post. Click "Add Milestone"

Click the "mm/dd/yyyy" field and add the due date for students' initial posts.

Click "plus" to add the required amount of posts

If you would like to use auto-grading, be sure to make sure to click "here". Remember: Auto-Grading is participation based only.

Click the "Points" field and add the necessary point value for each milestone

Click "Save & Close" to save the assignment

Click "Save & Publish" to make the assignment available to students
