Dealing with IDEXX samples in Prescreen

Collect samples throughout the session for new donors, annual screens, repeat screens or screens due to a circumstance such as the donor dog now living with an imported dog.

Remember to write the donor's number and their name on the respective biohazard bag. Also include the completed IDEXX form.

Make sure you indicate on the IDEXX lab form what screens are required. Don't forget that more than one screen may be required.

At the end of the session check with the phlebotomist which donors did or did not donate to confirm which donors need their screens to be submitted to IDEXX.

Place biohazard bags with samples for those dogs who **did donate a useable unit** into an external laboratory bag for laboratory screening. (Pink bag)

Clearly label the laboratory bag which contains samples to be sent for screening with the following information using a permanent marker; IDEXX lab code P273, session name and the number of donors having screening included within the bag e.g., P273 Woodcroft x 10

Place biohazard bags with samples for those dogs **who didn't donate a usable unit** into a clear zip lock bag for returning to PBB clearly marked with the session name and DND in permanent marker. eg **DND Woodcroft**

Any donor who has a blood sample taken but does not go on to donate a useable unit of blood must have their blood samples returned to PBB. These are placed in a zip lock bag clearly marked using a permanent marker with only the letters **DND and the session name** to allow the PBB laboratory team to dispose of them correctly. If there is any doubt on if a unit is useable the blood sample must be returned to PBB in the DND bag and the PBB laboratory staff notified by the end of session message and on the Collection Record FRM/COL/05 so that a decision can be made by them at processing.

Seal the external laboratory and DND bags.

Place the external laboratory bag(s) and DND sample bag(s) into a transportation box (Blood coolbox) ready for transportation. (Or on top if space is limited)

The Session Veterinary Surgeon is to communicate with the transportation – collection team/contract/volunteer driver.

It is the responsibility of the Session Veterinary Surgeon to instruct the person transporting the samples to ensure their safe dispatch to the laboratory in a timely manner either via the PBB processing centre or directly to the laboratory. (Samples from Scotland sessions go directly to the IDEXX laboratory as the lab is on the route back to Loughborough)

All blood samples stored in their biohazard bags should be placed into the appropriate laboratory bag at the end of the session and placed inside one of the transport boxes if space is available (outside on top of the transport box if limited space).
