Replacing a media library item

Update a document or image with new contents while retaining the original file's URL. This process is useful for updating files that live in multiple places on your site or that get shared widely so that your new content is efficiently distributed with minimal disruption.

From the **Content** screen, navigate to the **Media** tab

Locate the file you wish to update and click "Edit"

Locate the "Replace File" tool and select "Choose File" to upload a file from your local hard drive. Note: if this option is not available to you, the you must first enable the File Replace Module in your Drupal configuration.

Use your computer's file explorer to locate the file you want to upload and replace. **IMPORTANT**: ensure the new file you're uploading has an identical file name to the one you're replacing. Using an identical file name allows your file to retain the same URL. **BEST PRACTICE**: Use date/version agnostic file names **PRO TIP**: do not use an empty space in your file name. Blank spaces appear in URLs as the inelegant "%20". *Use underscores or hyphens instead of spaces in your file names.*

Ensure the "Overwrite original file" box is checked. Remember, the new file should have the same name as the one being replaced, and be of the same type (e.g., DOC replaces DOC, PDF replaces PDF)

Click "Save"

After saving, you may re-access your file from the media library (Step 2 above) and right click on the document link to open it in a new tab to view your new upload.

Verify your edits. Note your document URL. Your new document content will be available at the URL of the document you replaced. Consider using the first page or footer section of your document to indicate the date/version. Keep this information out of the file name for sharing via RCCL.
