Sign in to **AWS Management Console** as an **IAM User** **Pre-requisite** - Ensure you have selected the AWS region closest to your location\ For this guide, we will be using us-east-2 (Ohio) as a preferred choice

Type **Route 53** in the search bar and click on **Route 53** to view the Route 53 Dashboard

**What is Route 53?** Route 53 is an AWS DNS web service that manages domain names and directs internet traffic to resources based on rules and configurations set by the user.

On **Route 53** dashboard, on left bar click on the **Hosted zones**

**What are Hosted zones?** Hosted zones are containers within a DNS service that store records mapping domain names to IP addresses or other resources, enabling control over DNS resolution for a domain.

**Hosted zones** wizard will open, select the Hosted zone name **learnaws.com**

To create a new record, click on the **View details** button on the top right

**learnaws.com** wizard will open, click on the **Create record** button on the right side

**Create record** wizard will open, give the **Record name** as "**weighted**"

Open the text editor and copy the IP address of the Mumbai instance in the Mumbai region

On **Create record** wizard, scroll to the **Value** section and paste the copied IP address of the Mumbai instance in the text input field

Scroll to the **TTL(seconds)** section and enter "**10**" in the text input field

**What is TTL(seconds)?** TTL (Time To Live) is a parameter in DNS records that specifies how long the record can be cached by DNS resolvers, measured in seconds.

Scroll to the **Routing policy** section and from the dropdown select the option **Weighted**

**What is the Weighted Routing policy?** The Weighted routing policy in DNS allows you to distribute traffic among multiple resource record sets based on assigned weights, controlling the proportion of traffic sent to each set.

Scroll to the **Weight** section and enter "**10**" in the text input field

Scroll to the **Record ID** section and enter **A** in the text input field

Scroll the page and click on the **Create records** button

Record for **learnaws.com** was successfully created

Congratulations on successfully creating a new record in the hosted zone! Well done!

Repeat this step for the other 3 instances\ \ **Note:** For the third Record give the **Weight "80"** to the Frankfurt instance IP

Open the AWS Management console in another tab and select the AWS region as **Mumbai**

Type **EC2** in the search bar and click on **EC2** to view the **EC2** Dashboard

**What is EC2?** EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) is a service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud, allowing users to rent virtual servers (instances) to run applications or workloads.

On the EC2 dashboard click on **Instances** from the left bar to view the EC2 instances

**Instances** wizard will open, select the instance **Mumbai**

Click on the **Connect** button on the top right side

**Connect to instance** wizard will open, scroll to the end of the page and click on the **Connect** button

Type the command [[ping weighted.learnaws.com]] two times

Here you will receive the same IP address of the Frankfurt instance because you have entered the weight **80**

To create a new record, on the **learnaws.com** wizard, click on the **Create record** button on the right side

**Create record** wizard will open, give the **Record name** as "**latency"**

Open the text editor and copy the **Mumbai** instance IP address

On the **Create record** wizard, scroll to the **Value** section and paste the copied IP address of the Mumbai instance in the text input field

Scroll to the **TTL(seconds)** section and enter "**10**" in the **Value** text input field

Scroll to the **Routing policy** section and from the dropdown select the option **Latency**

**What is the Latency Routing policy?** The Latency routing policy in DNS directs traffic to the resource with the lowest network latency, ensuring optimal performance for end users.

Scroll to the **Region** section and from the dropdown select the option **Asia Pacific (Mumbai)** or whichever region is closer to you

Scroll to the **Record ID** section and enter "**A**" in the text input field

Scroll the page and click on the **Create records** button

Record for **learnaws.com** was successfully created

Similarly repeat this step for other 3 instances

Go to the **EC2 Instance Connect** page and type the command [[ping latency.learnaws.com]]

Here you will receive the **Mumbai** instance IP address because **Mumbai** region is closest
