How To Modify Primary Email Address on GitHub

The University of Denver is transitioning GitHub access to Enterprise Managed Users (EMU), a feature that enables DU to manage user accounts automatically. As part of this migration, any GitHub account currently associated with a @du.edu email address must be updated to use a personal email address instead. This guide will walk you through the steps to remove your @du.edu email from your GitHub account and add your personal email address.

If your current GitHub account's email is NOT your @du.edu email address, you do not need to complete these steps.

Navigate to [Github.com](https://Github.com) and login with your existing GitHub DU credentials

On the home screen, click your profile icon in the top right

Click "Settings"

Click "Emails"

Click the "Add email address *" field.

Type in your personal email address

Click "Add"

GitHub will email this new address. Open that email inbox, open the GitHub message, and click 'Verify Email'

Go back to Github. Under 'Primary Email Address', Select the newly added email.

Click "Yes, update my notification email"

Now logout and back in with your new email address to verify the change worked.

Do not skip the next step or you will not be able to access DU Organizations in GitHub once Enterprise Managed Users is enabled

Once logged back into GitHub, Navigate back to the Email settings and delete your @du.edu email from the profile.

You're done! This will allow DU to rebuild your Enterprise managed account within GitHub with your DU email address.
