Identify the topic and the linguistic feature you want to find. Type some keywords you would like your text to have. In my case, I am entering verbs related to food in the imperative form: (mangia passeggia compra ammira osserva).

Hit enter

Select the text and genre that looks promising.

Press [[CMD]] + [[F (Mac) or CRTL+F (PC) then enter specific words in the search bar so that you can decide if the text has enough of your keywords and therefore it is the right text for you or not.]]

Check the adaptability for your students' level. Return to your search results if this text does not meet your needs. Consider visiting specific sites to search for specific genres of text where you know you can find appropriate text. For instance a site like "Reddit" might have conversational, shorter texts on a wide range of topics. Tripadvisor or other travel sites have a mix of user-generated reviews and official descriptions of restaurants, tourist sites, and locations, which can be great for food and travel-related terms. Enjoy the process of treasure hunting.

The most effective approach is to think of the kind of language structure you need and the genre where these structures most often appear. For example, I can put in the search 'cake recipe' and 'mix the ingredients' or if I need the subjunctive I could add 'I think that' 'environment' and at least 5 verbs conjugated in the subjunctive.

After you tried Google search, or a search on a specific website, try to do a search using AI. For AI here are a couple of things to consider. Open your preferred AI tool, such as Google Gemini, ChatGPT, or another large language model.

In the text box, write a prompt similar to this one. Feel free to adjust or ask the AI to provide more specific informations. "I am a \[Your language\] educator. Find five authentic examples of \[Specify the type of text, e.g., YouTube video, news article, social media posts, blog\] that focus on the theme of \[Specify a cultural theme, e.g., 'everyday life for teenagers in Japan,' 'food culture in Mexico City,' or 'political discourse in France'\]. The texts should be suitable for a \[Specify the proficiency level of your students, e.g., intermediate, advanced\] class. And should have some of these words \[ specify\]. The purpose of these texts is to allow for cultural and linguistic analysis, rich content for critical thinking and analysis of socio-political content using the multiliteracies framework. Please provide a brief description and a direct link to each text." You can customize the parts in the brackets `[]` to fit your specific needs. Here is an example of my prompt: I am an Italian educator. I felt that AI gave me mostly articles, and since I was looking for second semester Italian level, I asked the AI to provide me some memes related to this topic or some interpersonal texts (such as dialogue or storytelling). For this AI provided me with some Instagram accounts and recommended checking them out because they often post memes as well. I started following them and AI was right. In one of them I found so many great memes I could use in my materials.
