How to Apply for a Permit in Kannapolis

This guide offers a step-by-step process for registering a Kannapolis permitting account, and applying for your first permit.

Navigate to [https://www.kannapolisnc.gov/Government-Departments/Planning](https://www.kannapolisnc.gov/Government-Departments/Planning)

Click "Obtain a Permit"

Find the Application you need. Fill out the PDF, and save it to your computer, you'll upload it in later steps.

Click "Accela Electronic Permitting"

Click "Register for an Account"

Choose your type

Fill out your information

Once you've created your account, click "Login"

Fill out your username or email, and password

Click "Kannapolis"

Read the disclaimer and click the "I have read and accepted the above terms." field.

Click "Continue Application »"

Fill in your address. Put the number in one of these fields, but not both. For the street name, you just want the main name, nothing before or after. For example, for N Main St, type Main.

Click "Search"

Click "Select" for the correct address. If you don't see the correct address, contact the Addressing Coordinator, Laura Coppola at 704-920-4375

If you're building a residence and you're within City Limits please select Plan Review then Building. This lets you do both the County's and the City's permit together. Upload the Residential Zoning Packet from before, and we'll build your zoning permit from that

Open the two Kannapolis dropdowns to find what kind of work you're doing

Select the type of work you're doing, and click "Continue Application"

Check the Owner, and click "Continue Application »"

Click "Select from Account" or "Add New" to add your contact information

Click "Continue"

Once you've added the contact, click "Continue Application »"

Fill out the project information. Application name should be what you're doing and the address, general description should include square footage of what you're building.

Select the appropriate option in this dropdown.

Fill out these custom Fields. They may be slightly different depending on what permit you're applying for.

Click "Continue Application »"

Plot plans need to show your property from a bird's eye view and be drawn to roughly to scale. We need measurements for each side of the parcel, and any existing or new buildings (decks, patios, pools, anything existing or proposed on your property) and their distance from the property line. If you need information on the size of your lot, you can go to[Map Cabarrus](https://location.cabarruscounty.us/mapcabarrus/) or[Rowan County GIS Website](https://gis.rowancountync.gov/gismaps/) depending on which county you live in.

Add your plot plan. This is also where you'll upload the Application you saved at the beginning.

Select your document and click "Continue"

Click this dropdown to tell us what the document is

Click the "Description:" field give us a little more information

Click "Save"

Once both your plot plan and signature page is uploaded, click "Continue Application »"

Check everything over, then click "Continue Application »"

And you're done. You should hear back from us within 2-3 working days. If you haven't heard from us, give us a call at 704-920-4350 and check in on the application. thanks
