How to Check Claude Usage Limits

Unlike ChatGPT, Claude is a lot stricter on Usage Limits - both per session and over the course of a week. Learn how to monitor your current usage and manage your plan limits within the Claude interface - and enable more if you must!

A "Usage Limit" is how much you can interact with Claude over a specific time period. Ie how many messages you can send to Claude or how long you can work with Claude Code for. Once you reach a limit, you either need to wait for the next time period, or pay for extra usage.

Check Usage

Navigate to <https://claude.ai/new>

Click your Avatar bottom left.

Click "Settings"

Click "Usage"

Under "Plan usage limits" you'll see how much is being in used in the "Current Session". A session is typically 5 hours long. You'll see how long until the next session starts - so plan carefully! Your limit is determined by the type of plan you have.

Your limits are affected by - **Model choice** (Opus will use more than Sonnet or Haiku for example). - **Tool usage** (eg web search, Research etc) - **Message length** - **File Attachment size** - **Current conversation length** - **Artifact creation & usage**

There is also a weekly limit - this will show you in hours and days before the new week begins.

Add Extra Usage

If you need to keep working, and can't wait for the next session or week to begin, you can purchase "Extra Usage"

Click "Adjust Limit"

Set your monthly spend limit ...or choose "set to unlimited" **!Be aware. Costs can mount up quickly.** It is immediately available to you.

In addition, you can choose to "Auto-reload" extra usage before you run out. **Again, be aware that costs can mount up quickly.** The default is "off". Click to enable

Decide when you want to reload, and with how much. Click "Turn on" to enable.
