How to Cross-List a Course in Canvas

This guide outlines the process for cross-listing courses (aka combining courses or merging courses) in Canvas, making it easier for Instructors to manage multiple sections of the same course efficiently. By following the outlined steps, Instructors can streamline their course organization, communication, and resource sharing among students. It is essential for instructors looking to enhance their course management experience on the platform.

Instructure

From the Canvas Dashboard, choose the **secondary course** that you'd like to combine with the primary course. The selected course will most likely not have any course material in it.

NOTE 1- Make sure you did not select the primary course. If you choose the primary course, you will not successfully cross-list two or more courses and will likely need to contact support to de-cross list them. NOTE 2- If the secondary course has content in it (i.e. assignments, pages, etc.), that content will not carry over through the cross-list process. Only content from the primary course will remain.

Within the secondary course, select the "Settings" hyperlink from the left-side course navigation menu.

Select the "Sections" tab at the top of Course Settings.

Click directly on the **hyperlink** of your course name under "Course Sections" In this example, we've selected "TECH 100-01".

The enrollments for this course will load on the left. Select the "Cross-List this Section" button.

In the "Search for Course:" field, type out the name of the primary course. If you are unable to find the course by name, try searching just the CRN number of the primary course.

Select the primary course from the auto-populated list.

Select "Cross-List This Section"

After selecting "Cross-List This Section", Canvas will automatically combine the two courses. You can then work on your one course. **NOTE FOR CROSS-LISTING MORE THAN TWO COURSES:** If you need to combine more than two courses, repeat this process for all other sections that need to be cross-listed with the primary course. If you'd like to confirm you've cross-listed successfully, follow the steps below!

Select "Settings" from the left-side course navigation menu.

Select the "Sections" tab at the top.

If there is more than one section appearing under the Course Sections list, then you've successfully cross-listed two or more courses!
