How to Request a Prerequisite Override for a Class

Navigate to the class search for the semester you are enrolling in

Click "Advanced Search"

Click "Attribute"

Enter the category of general education class(es) you are looking for. With Issues classes, there are six different categories. You may choose as many/few as you'd like. NOTE: If you need an online class to fit around your Nursing clinical, you may also want to go to "Instructional Methods" and enter "Online" or "Hybrid". Then hit "Search".

Do less scrolling between result pages by selecting "50" in the Per Page dropdown.

Find a class you are interested in. You can learn more about each class by clicking the title and reading the description. This is also where you can see if a specific section is an SWS course. Not all sections of the same class (BIO 328 for example) are SWS.

Make note of the course section number and Course Reference Number (CRN) as you will need this for the override process.

Click "Override Request"

Click "Registration Override Request Form"

Click "Submit"

Select the course from the dropdown list OR enter the 5 digit CRN and click "GO"

Verify the class that came up is the course you intended to register for. The title should match.

For Issues classes when you are below JR standing (55+ Credits) Select the "I am lacking a prerequisite." option.\ \ For full classes (BMS 250, CHM 234, etc.), select "this class is full but I must take it this semester". NOTE: If an issues class is full, please select a different section that is open. Course capacity overrides are not typically allowed unless in extenuating circumstances, especially when waitlists and other options are available.

Enter your clear and detailed explanation for why you need this override. You should explain the situation you are in and why another class or section would not meet your needs. Preferring a specific time or professor will not be approved. This should be a last resort with other classes conflict or no other options exist. For students requesting Issues overrides before JR standing, use the following: "I am a pre-nursing student waiting for admission to the program and need to fill my schedule for this semester. I have completed all other general education classes and major classes I can take before admission. I am at XX credits"

Review all information and submit your request. Depending on time of year, these may be approved immediately or could take up to two weeks to be approved. Please be patient, you will get an email decision to your GVSU email account. If approved, you will need to log in to Banner and register for the course immediately to ensure you have the seat you need in the class. Do not delay this registration as sought after classes can quickly become full.
