How to fill the UM Canvas course template

Every Canvas course comes with a default template. By using this template, students can easily find course information. This guide shows you how to fill this template.

At Maastricht University, every new Canvas course automatically has some default settings and pages. We call this the **UM template**. This template is updated every year by your faculty. With a consistent template, students can easily find their information in Canvas.

Because every faculty has a tailor-made template, minor differences might be visible in the following screenshots.

This is the Home page of the UM template. This page contains: 1. The course name. 2. Three blue buttons that link to main pages. 3. One orange button that links to the course modules. 4. The course description.

The course name is automatically imported via SAP and cannot be changed (except for manual courses).

Click 'edit' to add the Course Description. Here you can place a short summary of your course.

There are three buttons that direct students to the main pages of the course.

Let's start with filling the three main pages. Click "Overview" first.

Click "Edit" to change the Overview page. Do not import the Overview page from last year but copy and paste the information. Otherwise, you will have an outdated page.

There is already an automated link to My Timetable. Do not remove or change this. Note: not every faculty has this link.

You can add a Course schedule here.

Can also add the Assessment plan in this course or direct students to where they can find it.

Click "Save"

Click "Home" to go back to the other main pages.

Now let's change the Contact page. Click "Contact".

Click "Edit" and add the contact details here. Let students know how they can reach you. Do not import the Contact page from last year but copy and paste the information. Otherwise, you might have an outdated page.

Click "Save"

Go back to Home and click the "Resources" button.

Click " Edit" to add relevant resources for your course.

The [KeyLinks learning resources](https://library.maastrichtuniversity.nl/apps-tools/keylinks-learning-resources/) link is automatically created for your course. Do not remove this unless there is no KeyLinks list.

You can add other resources here or remove the title.

Click the "Modules" button to go to the course modules.

"For teachers only" is always on top of the Modules page. This page includes helpful links and support for Teachers and Tutors. If you import the Modules from last year, make sure to uncheck the "For teachers only - do not publish" module(s). Otherwise, you import the old module with outdated information.

This module is always visible to Teachers and Tutors, even though it is not published. Make sure that it stays unpublished.

Now you can fill your Modules page by adding pages, assignments, links, or videos.
