How to import data to the Canvas Gradebook

You can export scores from the Gradebook and download them to your computer as a CSV file. Here we show how you can edit this data and import the data back into the Canvas Gradebook.

This guide shows how to import scores to the Gradebook. Edit the file

Open the file to change or add grades.\ Some columns are read-only. You cannot change them.

It is also possible to add a new column. This will create a new assignment in the course when you upload the file. New assignments created this way will have 'No submission' as submission type, the 'Due date' is for everyone, and the assignment is added to the group 'Assignments'.

You can add grades to this new column.

You can delete unedited columns, but a few columns are required. Required columns and order: - Student - ID - SIS User ID (only required if you use SIS) - SIS Login ID (only required if you use SIS) - Section - Assignment (this can be for an existing assignment or a new assignment; retain IDs for existing assignments)

Save the file once all changes are made.

Make sure to select 'CSV UTF-8' as file type.

Import file in Canvas

Go to [Canvas](https://canvas.maastrichtuniversity.nl/) , and open the course where you want to import the file.

Click 'Grades' in the course menu.

Click 'Import'.

Click on "Choose file" and select the CSV file on your computer.

Click "Upload data" to start the upload.

Changes made to the existing assignments will be highlighted. You can still change the scores if needed.

If you added a new column, select 'A new assignment' from the dropdown menu.

Also assign the number of points.

Click 'Continue'

You will get an overview of the changes that will be made to the Gradebook. It is still possible to make changes here.

Click 'Save changes' to import all changes. You will be redirected to the Gradebook.

The scores are edited based on the imported CSV file. Refresh the page if your changes are not visible yet. Canvas might need some time to process the changes.

The new assignment has been created and added to the Gradebook.
