How to search Emerald Insight

Emerald Insight is an important resource for business students, which allows you to search for journal articles across a wide range of different Emerald publications. We don't currently have access to Emerald's Books and Case Studies collections, but some individual Emerald ebook titles are available via LibrarySearch.

Using Basic Search in Emerald

Follow the link to **Emerald** from the [Course Resource](https://www.brookes.ac.uk/library/resources-and-services/course-resource-help/business/how-to-use-journal-article-databases#emerald) page for Business. You may be prompted to enter your Brookes login (student number and password). This is the main search screen.

The basic search box is at the top of the page. Type in your search term (e.g. brexit) and click on the search icon (magnifying glass).

This is the search results page. By default, Emerald will sort results by relevancy, but you can change this to sort by date (newest/oldest) by clicking on the drop-down menu.

You can check if an article is relevant to your search by clicking on the **Abstract** button to open the Abstract and Summary of the article. If it looks relevant to your project, click on the article title to view more details, or select **View article** or **PDF** to read the full text. Using Advanced Search in Emerald

On the Emerald home page, click **Advanced Search** (next to the search box).

This will open the Advanced Search options. You can use this screen to search for a specific citation, or to do a keyword search.

You can broaden your search by selecting **Any** under the search box, or narrow it down by selecting **All**, or **Exact phrase**.

To search for a phrase instead of individual words (e.g. "corporate social responsibility"), select the **Exact Phrase** option, then click **Filter** underneath the search button to open further options.

Enter a **Date Range** to search for articles published within a specific timeframe (e.g. within the past 5 years).

If you only want to search within specific journal titles, you can tick the boxes next to those titles in the **Publication** list.

When you have finished selecting your options, click **Search**.

This search has returned over 21,000 results, which is a bit too broad. (This may vary when you search, as new articles are added every day).

Use the filters on the left-hand side to narrow down your results. For example, you can select the **Format** (e.g. **Journal Articles**, which has been highlighted below). Please bear in mind that we don't currently have access to case studies, and only limited access to ebooks via Emerald.

You can narrow down further by **Type** to **Research Article** to exclude articles such as reviews and editorials.

You can also select a specific **Subject** from Emerald's list of subject headings.

Under **Availability** you can limit your results to only those **Available** in full text, or **Open Access**.

You can add more search terms with the **Add term** button

If your project is focused on the UK, you could add **United Kingdom** to limit results by geographical area.

The default filter for each search term is **All** (i.e. search across all fields), but by clicking on **Filter** you can change this to something more specific, such as Title or Abstract.

Once you have finished making changes to your search, click the **Update** button.

This has reduced our results to 79, which is much more manageable. (Again, your search may look different as new material is added). Check if an article is relevant to your search by clicking on the **Abstract** button to open the Abstract and Summary of the article. How to read, share and cite articles

Open one of the articles to read it by clicking on the title, **View article** or **PDF.**

At the top of the screen you will see the article details and title. The author names are hyperlinked, so you can view more of their work. The article contents is listed on the left-hand side, so you can jump to different sections. You will also see a number of different options in the grey bar underneath the article title.

Click **Share** to share a link to the article on social media or via Email.

To cite this article, click **Cite**, then **View This Citation.**

This will open up a pop-up window with download options for different reference management software, including **EndNote**. \ \ **NB** - the citation displayed is not in the Brookes Harvard style, but EndNote (or other reference management tool) will format it in the style of your choice.

On the right-hand side, there are boxes with further links that may be useful. For example, at the top, Emerald lists the **Latest**, **Most Read** and **Most Cited** articles related to this topic.

There are options to set up **Email Alerts** for citation activity on this article, or for more relevant articles on this topic.

Emerald will also suggest articles and chapters on related topics in the **Suggested Reading, Related Chapters** and **Recommended for you** boxes. These are selected by an algorithm, so they may not always be relevant to your search, but they provide another way to expand your search if you are not finding enough results.

If you want to find other articles that have cited this one, go to **Cited By** and click the **Google Scholar** link.
